Great Hot Swap Cage

iStarUSA BPU-230SATA-BLUE 2x5.25" to 3x3.5" SATA Hot-swap Raid Cage
iStarUSA BPU-230SATA-BLUE 2x5.25" to 3x3.5" SATA Hot-swap Raid Cage

Pros: Just installed two of these in an iStarUSA D-400-6 chassis running FreeNAS on an ASRock motherboard. These hot swap cages are well made, easy to install and look good. So far they are working as advertised. I have one cage loaded with 2TB drives. The drives run at 26C, 28C and 30C from bottom to top, which seems reasonable. Transfer rates when copying files over Gigabit Ethernet, as reported by FreeNAS, are around 500Mbps. I had a problem with the iStarUSA chassis they are installed in, and opened a trouble ticket on the iStar website. They replied within an hour and we worked out the problem, so I'd have to rate iStarUSA customer service five eggs as well.

Cons: Fans are a little noisy, but seem to do the job (see the HD temps in Pros

Not TOTALLY unlocked!

Samsung Ch@t 220 GT-E2220 2G Unlocked Cell Phone 2.2" Red 47 MB
Samsung Ch@t 220 GT-E2220 2G Unlocked Cell Phone 2.2" Red 47 MB

Pros: Works on some SIMS (AT&T, O2)

Cons: Won't Work on H2O SIMS, which means that it is not really "unlocked". PDA Giant, which unlocked these phones, tested them on H2O and also found that they won't work.

Great SSD, Lousy Support

SAMSUNG 830 Series 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7PC128B/WW
SAMSUNG 830 Series 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7PC128B/WW

Pros: This SDD replaced a failing hard drive. I used Windows Home Server to restore from a backup, and it was a piece of cake. Old hard drive took to 100 seconds from end of BIOS to complete loading of Windows. With this drive, it takes 24 seconds.

Cons: I tried to register the product on Samsung website. Dream on if you think you will ever make THAT work! Samsung should take a lesson from Western Digital; their registration, warranty check, and RMA website works perfectly.

Great UPS for none Active PFC loads

CyberPower Smart App Intelligent LCD Rackmount GreenPower UPS OR500LCDRM1U 500VA 300W 4 x 5-15R Battery/Surge Protected 2 x 5-15R Surge Protected Outlets UPS
CyberPower Smart App Intelligent LCD Rackmount GreenPower UPS OR500LCDRM1U 500VA 300W 4 x 5-15R Battery/Surge Protected 2 x 5-15R Surge Protected Outlets UPS

Pros: Great UPS for non- Active Power Factor Correction loads. Designed so batteries can be changed from the front- but... see Other thoughts. I used this UPS to power a Windows Home Server. Grid Junction UPS manager add on recognized the UPS, and all works perfectly- but... see Cons.

Cons: I bought this UPS to protect a WHS powered by an Antec EA650 power supply with active power factor correction. The total power draw of the WHS is 90 watts, which should give a run time of over 20 minutes. The UPS works fine when AC power is available, but when AC power is removed, the UPS goes nuts, and the batteries are drawn down to almost dead within a few minutes. I contacted CyberPower support regarding this, and their response was very prompt. They advised me that the OR series of UPS does not put out a perfect sine wave, and power supplies with active PFC don't play well with that. They suggested their CyberPower PR series, which puts out a pure sine wave. Rather than change the UPS, I removed the Antec PS and replaced it with a Zalman 750HP, which doesn't have APFC. Works perfect now, with advertised run-time on power outages.

Overall Review: Kudos to Calvin at CyberPower for helping me figure my problem. Regarding the battery change-out, the batteries sit on a plastic tray that slides out from the front when the plastic front panel is snapped off, and the metal sub-panel is removed. The problem is that the tray assembly fits so tightly that the only way I could remove the batteries and tray was to remove the UPS top cover. the problem can be solved by simply removing the tray and sliding in the batteries without the tray. So if you install this in a rack that has anything above the UPS, check to see if you can remove the batteries from the front before you install and power everything up.

Doesn't play well with UPS

Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply
Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W Continuous Power ATX12V Ver.2.2 / EPS12V version 2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply

Pros: Works well when plugged into utility power.

Cons: Doesn't work well when plugged into a CyberPower OR500 UPS. I used this PS/UPS combo in a Windows Home Server build. When AC power drops, the Antec hammers the UPS with a BIG load, and the UPS battery drops to a critical level within seconds, initiating a WHS graceful shutdown. This pretty much negates the UPS carrying the server through brief outages.

Overall Review: Replaced the Antec with a Zalman 750HP and it works perfectly with the CyberPower UPS.

Great NAS Case

iStarUSA D-400-6-Blue Steel 4U Rackmount Compact Stylish Server Chassis 6 External 5.25" Drive Bays
iStarUSA D-400-6-Blue Steel 4U Rackmount Compact Stylish Server Chassis 6 External 5.25" Drive Bays

Pros: Bought this as open box item. Case was in perfect shape (except for lock; see cons) and all accessories were included. Case has tons of room and makes a perfect NAS box. I did put a drop of epoxy on all the standoffs so they don't come out underneath the motherboard when removing screws. The case comes with a big hulking metal bar across the case with plastic hold-downs for add-on cards. Since I'm using a small motherboard as a NAS server with no cards, it was easy to remove the bar. The case cover removes easily by removing a screw from each side, and a thumb screw from the back, giving total access to the case. The two HD cages at the front remove easily also. I'm putting two iStarUSA sata hot-swap cages in them for a total of 6x2TB storage. This case is well engineered and well made.

Cons: The lock that secures the two front doors was broken. It turns to the locked position, and turns to the unlocked position, but the key won't lock it in the locked position. No big deal, wasn't going to use it anyway.
