Most Favorable Review

Rocky start, but solid overall

BIOSTAR TZ68A+ LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
BIOSTAR TZ68A+ LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Solid board, seems to work well. Every feature I needed plus some, and the price can't be beat.

Cons: The board detected and automatically configured the RAM. That'd be great if the configuration was correct. Good news: you can use DRAM insight in O.N.E. portion to get the correct information. Why that info isn't used to automatically configure I have no idea. This misconfiguration caused the machine to have to attempt boot three times every cold boot. No info in the manual (hardly any info in the manual at all!) about how to troubleshoot this, so fixing it took way more time that it should have.

Overall Review: ATX, but not full size ATX. Three mobo standoffs aren't used. It's a great board for somebody with experience. I couldn't recommend it for your first build though; the documentation is too poor and the bios configuration too tricky.

Most Critical Review

Your components will fit. Barely.

SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum front panel, 0.8 mm SECC body Grandia Series GD01B-MXR ATX Media Center / HTPC Case
SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum front panel, 0.8 mm SECC body Grandia Series GD01B-MXR ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Good looking case, seems solidly built. Would fit in well with the rest of the home media components.

Cons: - Space. I don't know that you can actually do a better job than this at designing a HTPC-style case, but I'd sure like to see somebody do it. My wife had to help me multiple times at getting various things connected; much smaller hands than my ginormous meat hooks. - Time. The build took 8 hours, which is insanely long when compared to a more typical 3 hours for me. This was mostly caused by having to work within such small confines, but was compounded by poor screw placement, having to use screws in the first place, and the instructions getting the order of operations wrong. Don't believe what they wrote, install your mobo before anything else. Or else you'll remove whatever you put in so there's enough room... - Heat. I think this thing could use at least one more cut-out for another fan to move air through the case. Taking the lid off makes the fans slow way down almost instantly (Asus smart fan tech), seems like an airflow problem to me.

Overall Review: For all my complaints, the end product is quite pleasing. And, we fit a metric ton of components into this thing. We put in 5 hard drives plus a dvd drive. I don't think the other 5.25 bay is usable because it would hit the RAM. You might be able to sneak another hard drive in there...

Pros: Fast, quality build, what you see is what you get.

Cons: It can't do my laundry for me...

Overall Review: Third Velociraptor I've used in a build, these drives rock-solid and well worth the money for your OS partition.

Simply Outstanding.

TRENDnet TEW-637AP Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader 802.11b/g/n and 802.11e up to 300 Mbps
TRENDnet TEW-637AP Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader 802.11b/g/n and 802.11e up to 300 Mbps

Pros: Support for four SSIDs, and you can set the security differently for each. This is awesome when you have one older device that won't support TKIP and everything else does... Simple basic setup worked for all of my devices except one, and that one was easy to handle once I figured out how to log into the AP. Blazing fast connection, and great reception throughout my single floor house.

Cons: It'd be nice if the initial setup let you know that there's additional configuration available if the basic setup doesn't cut it. There is, check the documentation.

Overall Review: It's smaller than I thought it'd be. Nice!
