Good compromise
Pros: Compact without being too small to work on. 80+ Efficiency power supply (theoretically). Plastic bezel separates exhaust from stock Intel fan from rest of case. Includes a dust filter. Full height card slots - and you ought to be able to get a long video card to fit (not that the included power supply has a 6 pin connector).
Cons: I'm a sucker for 120mm fans. This case uses the power supply fan to cool the rest of the case...and it doesn't look like you have any other cooling options. Not sure I would push anything more than integrated graphics with that kind of a cooling setup. 4 pin power supply cable could be a bit longer.
Overall Review: Don't order memory with protruding heat spreaders (height wise). It will interfere with the plastic heat bezel. Orange HD activity light. Blue power light. (NewEgg, please include a searchable field for case lights...would love to be able to match up LED colors between case, card reader and optical drives).
Not so good...
Pros: Decent price, form factor, price.
Cons: Only can get one memory slot to work. Tried both the compatibility listed GSkill Sniper F3-12800CL9D and Corsair's low profile CML8GX3M2A and could only get one DIMM working and therefore only 4 GB of RAM. Updated the BIOS, tried manually setting timings, and called technical support. Might be an issue with the memory controller on the Intel i5 3570 processor, might be an issue with the motherboard. Also - major issue - one chassis fan header. Need at least two for any decent case fans.
Overall Review: ITX and smaller machines are the way forward.
Incomplete product
Pros: It works. I like the idea of buying a chassis and being able to connect any hard drive or SSD through WiFi to my tablet or laptop. Documentation is extensive but incomplete. I love the size and weight.
Cons: Would not work out of the box with a Samsung 840 SSD. After two days of attempts gave up trying to update the firmware. Chassis is operating with a three year old 160 GB hard drive with no issues. The Gauntlet really needs a better battery meter on the unit or on in the software. I don't know if it charges through USB or if I have to use the USB to power cable. Firmware upgrade instructions are murky - you copy the firmware file to the root of the drive - but, the firmware upgrade in the software sees the original zip file and when you uncompress it the BIN file disappears. More battery life would be appreciated. The WiFi passthough works but takes about 5-10 attempts to get it running. Would also be nice if the device used my existing list of APs on my tablet instead of making me reprogram them all into the Gauntlet.
Overall Review: Would be nice to have Patriot build one of these that supports one or more mSSDs. Also would be nice to have a version that supports RAID and multiple 2.5 inch drives. Patriot could address the battery issues by putting a connector on the side of the chassis and selling a snap on supplemental battery.
Garbage
Pros: Cheap, NetGear
Cons: Wireless doesn't work at all for my Droid or Blackberries. It's a well documented issue on the web. NetGear technical support is virtually non-existent. This is the v1 of the router...v2, and v3 fixed a lot of these issues.
XP Warning...
Pros: Cheap, fast machine in a great small format factor. Both VGA and DVI plugs for monitors.
Cons: Machine comes preloaded with Vista Business. You have to reimage the machine with two provided Windows XP DVDs to "downgrade" the machine. Acer warns that this process voids the machine waranty. The image is also horribly out of date. Took over four hours to reimage the machine and download XP SP3 and all related patches.
Overall Review: After billing my client four additional hours of work for this inexpensive machine I would seriously recommend another machine. Acer can do much better with the preloaded image on this machine. Acer's tech support, too, leaves much to be desired.
Cooked two of them,,,
Pros: Excellent features. Lots of SATA ports.
Cons: I cannot get this motherboard cool with the factory heat sinks. I've burned up two boards with factory settings...in a case with 2 x 120 mm fans. Going to order a DFI board and be done with this issue.
Overall Review: Replace the heat sinks. Going to need an active system or water cooliing to keep this board running.
