MSI X99S SLI Plus LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

5 out of 5 eggs No RAID ability using port 5-6* Follow up. 11/17/2014

This review is from: MSI X99S SLI Plus LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Sent the motherboard to MSI for RMA. Within a week a replacement board was sent back to me. The replacement board worked on first boot. After setting the drive mode to RAID it seen all 6 disks. The problems I was having have been fixed it appears. I am giving 5 eggs for MSI support.

Cons: None now that MSI replaced the bad motherboard.

ASRock H87WS-DL ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel H87 DDR3 1600/1333
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Asrocks customer support. Newegg and the Easy RMA process.

Cons: Ordered this mobo to run a small Win 2012 R2 file server. Got it installed and first boot got nothing. Spent time troubleshooting. Pulled the CPU,RAM, and the power supply and swapped them from another computer and everything worked on the other computer. I even swapped the power supply cables.. RMA'd the board back as it looked like it was a DOA mobo. Got the second board and it was the same thing. That's when I got Asrock tech support involved. They came back with this very important advice:
I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused you. Based on your problem description and the list of components in use, I believe that the system BIOS on the board needs to be updated to P2.30 in order for your new Haswell-R CPU to work/POST. The board you purchased from the retail store may have been stored in the retail warehouse for quite some time. The system BIOS that came with it is the earliest version. Back in the day when the BIOS was written, the Haswell-R CPU wasn't released so a certain coding wasn’t used in BIOS development.

What you may try now is to temporarily use a non-Haswell-R CPU to make the board to POST first, then update the BIOS to P2.30 immediately. Please kindly follow this link and click on the BIOS on the left menu to download the BIOS update file. You may use Instant Flash within the BIOS menu to update the BIOS.

Other Thoughts: Haswell-R WILL NOT work with this board unless you have bios P2.30 or newer. If you try a Haswell-R you will not be able to boot it and will get a blank screen. Fans will turn on and you will still be able to shut it off with the power switch. Newegg has a stock of these boards and most likely will have bios version 1.0 on it. You will need an older Haswell CPU installed first to update the bios to recognize the newer CPU's.
I know this board would have worked just fine with a newer bios and with newegg and asrock helping sort this out I give it 4 eggs.

1 out of 5 eggs No RAID ability using port 5-6* 10/16/2014

This review is from: MSI X99S SLI Plus LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: It looks good. Supports the latest and greatest LGA2011-3.
Seems to be well built.

Cons: The documentation is wrong. It states on their website and in the manual 0/1/5/10(SATA1~6 only) Ports 5-6 will not work in any RAID mode with ports 1-4. Even when not using the M2 card.
*Ports 5-10 are not usable for RAID. You can select them in your RAID creation but once you "create volume" it drops to degraded with port 5 (0.6 in the bios) and another disk "missing". The missing disk even gets the serial number messed up so you don't have the ability to remove the missing disk.

Other Thoughts: I am disappointed in this purchase. I have opened a case with MSI and have used the MSI forums to discover that this problem has happened to other users without a fix yet. I plan to RMA this board for a refund if MSI support does not have a fix soon.
