PS Is NOT Standard Size

Linkworld 617-C2628-P4 Silver/Black Metal Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 300W Power Supply
Linkworld 617-C2628-P4 Silver/Black Metal Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 300W Power Supply

Pros: Case is solid, made of failrly good metal. It's thinner than a regular mini-ATX case, which makes it a great size for a HTPC or another application where space is an issue.

Cons: Contrary to another reviewer's opinion, the included PS/PS bay is NOT standard size. It is HP/Compaq-sized - i.e. you need a nonstandard power supply if you want to replace the included one. Also note that while the Newegg specifications show a 300w power supply as the included one, the actual product is clearly marked as a 250w. If you think 300w is just enough juice for the system you're building, don't rely on this product for more than 250w.

Overall Review: It's an okay case for the cost. I would have happily used it if the power supply bay was standard-sized by just swapping out the included unit with a new PS. Newegg shipped this and the rest of my order fast as always, and they quickly filled my RMA request through the online chat.

Okay For One-Time Use

Xtatix Model xcc-232 3 ft. USB to RS232 Cable
Xtatix Model xcc-232 3 ft. USB to RS232 Cable

Pros: Takes a male DB9 connector and changes it into a type A USB plug. Fairly good construction, appears to communicate a bit faster than just a standard serial cable.

Cons: Doesn't include drivers. You have to download them, and contrary to a previous review, they aren't easy to find on the MFR site. In fact, the product isn't even LISTED. Resets the COM port it uses every time the computer restarts. You can't tell it to use COM2, for example, and expect to use COM2 after a restart. Doesn't have screw mounts.

Overall Review: I used this adapter on an XP Pro machine without any difficulty once the driver was installed. I tried it on a customer's XP Home machine and XP didn't even detect that it was plugged in. Eventually I got it to work but it'll probably break again the next time the customer's machine restarts.

Looks great

Hanns·G HZ251HPB Black 25" 2ms X-Celerate OD 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 X-Contrast 15,000:1 DCR (800:1 typical) Built-in Speakers
Hanns·G HZ251HPB Black 25" 2ms X-Celerate OD 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 X-Contrast 15,000:1 DCR (800:1 typical) Built-in Speakers

Pros: HUGE! Bezel is thin. This monitor can be set super bright and is such by default. It looks nice on my desk and surprisingly has a small footprint than my 23" monitor.

Cons: This monitor emits a high-pitched buzzing noise, almost like a tiny fan is running. It's reasonably quiet but gets irritating after a few minutes. As others have mentioned, the buttons are difficult to use but I don't consider that a big deal. There's a green light on the front of the monitor that indicates power. It's not blindingly bright or exceedingly dim. It doesn't really bother me, but it's something to be aware of when making your purchasing decision. The X-Contrast feature was annoying during movie playback. The screen kept changing contrast at the oddest times, usually making the picture look worse.

Overall Review: There are two modes: PC and Video. Video mode seems to be just a lower resolution.

Works if you never restart

Aluratek USB to Serial DB9 RS232 Cable AUS100
Aluratek USB to Serial DB9 RS232 Cable AUS100

Pros: Allows for USB connections to older hardware. Most laptops don't have a DB9 port anymore, so this device is theoretically useful as an adapter.

Cons: Purchased this unit to replace a Xtatix version of the same thing. The drivers for both units switch COM ports when the computer is rebooted, and the COM ports in use are not released when the device is removed. Eventually you run out of available COM ports. Had stop-n-start luck with this unit - it would communicate about every third time the driver was reinstalled. This is with a Keri Systems electronic access control system, so flaky functionality doesn't cut it.

Overall Review: If you just need to get your serial mouse or keyboard working with your newer computer, you might be able to get by with this unit. Anything that requires a static COM port assignment between reboots (e.g. games with joysticks) probably won't work unless you're willing to go find the correct COM port and then configure the software for it each time.

I'd buy another

Hanns-G 19" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1440 x 900 D-Sub, DVI-D HW-191DPB
Hanns-G 19" Active Matrix, TFT LCD WXGA+ LCD Monitor 5 ms 1440 x 900 D-Sub, DVI-D HW-191DPB

Pros: This 19" widescreen has a nice, clear picture and you won't be disappointed by the brightness. It actually hurt my eyes out of the box, but the on-screen display makes it easy enough to change. The monitor itself is light and the stand is stable. It's high enough that you probably won't even need the tilt functionality. My monitor arrived quickly (as usual - go Newegg!) and with no dead or stuck pixels. The package included a black power cord, black VGA cable, and black DVI cable. The DVI cable is about three and a half feet long.

Cons: It didn't work out of the box, but that might be my fault. I hooked the monitor up to my DVI out on a Radeon 9600 and booted the machine - and the monitor remained blank. Connecting my CRT to the VGA port worked just fine, but the DVI caused all sorts of trouble. I worked on it for three hours, getting to where the Windows logo would appear but afterwards I'd get the "No Signal" message. Eventually I was unable to use either the VGA or DVI port to get a picture, and only through a lot of trial and error did I get this monitor to work consistently with my DVI port. Two small things: The screen outputs more heat than my CRT screen did (the CRT shoots it out through the back), and I can actually feel the additional heat on my face from three feet away. This may be normal. The other thing is the status LED - it's a very bright green when the monitor's on (which is good), and a very bright amber when it's on standby (which is disconcerting at night).

Overall Review: My company bought two Hanns-G 19" monitors and I've purchased this one. There have been no quality problems with any of them. If you don't want to spend the extra money on a Samsung, the Hanns-G offers a good price and a good picture.

Appears to work okay

AZiO ENC303U (BLACK) Acrylic & Plastic 3.5" IDE USB 2.0 & USB 1.1 Compliant USB External Enclosure
AZiO ENC303U (BLACK) Acrylic & Plastic 3.5" IDE USB 2.0 & USB 1.1 Compliant USB External Enclosure

Pros: The enclosure does its job. I was able to take off the six outer screws (tiny!) and install my WD 250GB drive without incident. Windows XP recognized the drive and installed the necessary drivers immediately. The power cord is long enough to reach pretty much any outlet your CPU does. The converter box on the power cord features a little light to indicate power. Overall, the drive looks pretty classy and feels like fairly solid construction.

Cons: DOES NOT INCLUDE FAN! The Newegg description touts an 'ultra-smooth' ball-bearing fan that does not exist on the product itself. The power cord is two-pieces and has the weirdest connector I've ever seen - almost like a male S-video plug. Obviously proprietary.

Overall Review: Because the product came without the fan I drilled 21 small holes in the top of the case and 4 large ones in the bottom to create a semblance of airflow. So far the drive has not gotten very hot, but we'll see what happens when it's on for 12 hours straight. The bright front LED that a lot of people have complained about really is very bright - almost as bright as my LED flashlight. Obviously it's very easy to disconnect the LED from inside the enclosure, but I like having an indication that the drive is on, especially in the dark when I can't see the power switch. I 'fixed' the LED with a small piece of masking tape. If I get concerned about the aesthetics of the drive, I'll find some colored tissue paper and tape a triple layer over the light.
