Generally Great Drive
Pros: Reliable History of Great Drives Good price/performance
Cons: Developed bad sector in first few uses (not typical of this brand)
Overall Review: I've used HGST drives exclusively for the past 5 years. This is the first one to have any problem. I have four of them in my NAS and this was just to be a "stand-by" drive to have handy. But I formatted and used it as a temporary scratch drive a couple of times, just to check it out. Well, it soon developed a bad spot in a sector that was not detected by the original formatting process. That meant that a file written to it was not readable after that! Gone. Fortunately, I had another good copy, so I didn't lose anything. Upon erasing the file and writing zeros to the drive, the sector is now marked as "don't use". It should not be a problem in my NAS, if/when I use it there. The redundancy of the NAS will recover any such errors automatically. But WD now owns HGST. Their diagnostic says the drive "Passes" .. so it won't be replaced. HGST's have always been my "go to" brand. They are now on my watch list. Hope this was just a one time thing.
Wasted a Month on This
Pros: I had purchased a new one of these before and it worked GREAT.
Cons: I wasted a month, and 7-8 phone calls to Comcast (you know how painful that was), and finally Silicondust's (email) support decided it was a hardware problem. I had to pay the shipping to return it.
Overall Review: I have another (new) one of these that is working great. That's why I didn't associate much risk at getting a refurbished one. Obviously someone already put a lot of pain into this unit and it wasn't working then, and they didn't retest it well enough. Buy a NEW unit!
Flawless - Great Drive
Pros: Reliable Easy installation
Cons: None.
Overall Review: My wife's computer needed an SSD of this size. And as any husband knows, you don't mess around when you're taking care of your wife's computer. This one has not let me down. It was flawless for 3-4 years until I recently retired the computer . I'll now move it to another computer of mine.
Flawless
Pros: Great history of reliability Nice performance
Cons: Little louder than some. No big deal
Overall Review: Highly recommended. I gradually replaced all my older 4TB drives in my Synology NAS. Now all its drives are this model. All four have been working like a charm. I've only used HGSTs for the past five years. I have at least 10-12 of them in various computers and NAS units, regular computers and my video server computer here at home.
Beware of Software
Pros: Seem to work GREAT!
Cons: To use management software, you have to accept installation of Adobe AIR and Adobe's licenses giving them the right to serve ads and sell your IP address, and give access to your information to third parties which they don't promise to control at all. Have to allow installation of Java in your browser, and accept certificates with Unknown origin/makers.
Overall Review: I bought this switch to allow me to manage my network and make it MORE secure -- NOT LESS. It seems to me that manufactures like Netgear are compromising our privacy and security for a profit.
