can i use a pointing device with this monitor?

You didn't say what type of pointing device you were considering. Mouse, Pen, Pad, AK47? My daughter uses her mouse 95% of the time. She also has a Wacom tablet and that works great also.

Can I use this as a secondary monitor?

I built a new Win8 computer system for my daughter and matched this monitor with the video card I put in it.  She is only running one monitor but there should be no problem running two if your video card supports dual HDMI out. This is a great monitor if you are running Windows 8. If you are only running Windows 7, a 10 point touch is a little bit of over kill unless you plan to run Win8 later. This monitor looks great and runs great. Just remember you need to have a HDMI for the video and USB2 for this touch screen to function.
