Is it possible to just buy a battery for the RAID controller instead of the whole kit?

Yes, you can get a replacement battery if you already have the module and the battery has gone bad.  I haven't done the shopping to find it, however, so I can't be more specific.  The battery won't do any good without the module, however; the module is much more than just a holder.
