The right batteries and chargers are essential to help you get the most out of your quadcopter or RC vehicle. There are different types of batteries suitable for different RC toys, as well as specific chargers and useful accessories like LiPo safety bags.
There are three main types of drone batteries: lithium polymer (LiPo), nickel cadmium (NiCd) and nickel metal hydride (NiMH). LiPo batteries are the same that you use for your laptop and smartphone. They offer several advantages over other battery types, like a higher capacity. They also tend to be more lightweight than NiCd and NiMH batteries. LiPo batteries have a shorter lifespan than the others. Typically, they only last 300 or 400 charge cycles. When choosing your RC quadcopter batteries, pay attention to their weight. If the battery is too heavy, it may make it difficult for your drone to take off. Double-check the maximum weight that your drone can support. Typically, drone batteries with a higher voltage tend to be heavier. It is important to choose the right voltage for the motor of your drone. Some quadcopters support extra batteries, so if one of them suddenly dies, your gadget will not fall in the middle of a flight. Many battery chargers can refill several batteries at the same time. For drones, it's recommended to use batteries with an optimum C rating.
With their fire-retardant or fire-resistant materials, LiPo bags help reduce damage in case of a battery fire. You should use them every time you charge or transport your batteries. They are also very useful when you are planning on not using a battery for a certain amount of time. Many airlines require LiPo bags when you're carrying your drone batteries with you on holiday.
LiPo drone batteries require a compatible charger. Many models let you set the charging rate of your choice. While most RC quadcopter batteries can support a charging rate up to 5C, it is advisable to charge them at a slower rate, preferably 1C. This way, the battery will have a longer life. Cheaper chargers only support 2S and 3S LiPo batteries, while advanced models support up to 6S. Many high-end chargers also allow entering the cell count of your battery. Most LiPo chargers have a balance charging feature, to prevent fires or damage to the battery. When buying a drone charger, you should make sure that it has the appropriate wattage for your battery. The higher the wattage, the faster the charge.
Battery monitors beep when your battery is running low, so you have time to land the drone safely before it dies. Some models will also show you the voltage of the battery, so you can double-check that everything is fine before taking off your drone.
