I see a lot of people having problems connecting to cable modems after installing this router ... and then going back to the old router everything works ok ... so, does it make any difference if you change the MAC address on the new ASUS router to what the MAC address was on the OLD router? I'm thinking of getting one of these and I know that my MAC address on my current router is tied to the static IP address from my ISP, so in my case I would need to change the MAC address on the ASUS router to match the current MAC that I have today.

I don't think the problem is with the router and the modem I think it's with the people trying to set it up. Your modem has an IP which when you have a router your router fix up that IP address works the same way as hooking your computer up to your modem. I think they're problem that they're having is setting up the security on the router I've had a lot of good luck with mine

Does this router function as a modem also, or will I have to buy one seperatly?

Dsl or cable modem will need to be puchsed separately. Consider upgradong your current modem to at least a 24 channel upload and 16 channel download, and verify your ISP supports your modem model. Cheers
