Are there any mechanical differences (I see the physical differences) between this and the G.SKILL FTB-3500C5-D?

No, there are not. They are purely esthetical differences and intended to match a specific version of their RAM, like as an example, Corsair has a different looking cooler for their Vengeance series than they do for the Dominator. I have used both and are holding up very well. The only thing that would have made them better, if if instead of using a generic Molex socket for power, they were available with a four pin PWM socket to take advantage of the newer motherboards.

Question 2

Would it be ok/safe to paint the frame and rings around the fans? so basically the frame. If so what kind of paint?

Hi Johnathan,
I don't think it would hurt to paint the frame and rings around the fans.  I have not done that or thought about it.  I would be sure NOT to get any paint on the fan blades as this could throw it out of balance and cause a pre-mature burn out of the fan motor(s).  For the type of paint, I'd choose something that's heat resistant -- not sure of a specific brand other than Rust Oleum.
