Is this compatible with linux?

Absolutely - it only communicates with the master SATA port on the motherboard. Although it is designed to fit into a PCI or PCIE slot, thats just for support, not for power or data. I have had three of these running under Ubuntu for about 2 years now with no major issues

Does this show the drives as a Single "disk"? Similar to RAID 0?

No, this will show each drive independently, so if you have 5 drives attached you will see 5 drives by default. You can use the OS to provide RAID capabilities.
