Great server case with rails

Pros: - Comes with rails
- 24 Hotswap bays
- Additional drive mounting inside case as well as spot for slim optical drive accessible from the rear

Cons: - Requires an adapter to connect power button, reset, leds, etc to a non-supermicro motherboard (CBL-0084L)
- No printed manual included (would be nice to have at least a quick guide with explanations of various cables)

Other Thoughts: Felt it necessary to dock one star due to the lack of the adapter cable to use this with a non-supermicro board. I wasn't aware I needed this cable until after I had ordered the case. Paired this with an ASUS P9D-E/4L server board with no issues.

Definitely to loud

Pros: This chassis is perfectly build. It's build like a tank. It's really solid. The rail system is very easy to install. I didn't encounter any problem to install this chassis in our rack. The air flow seams seams ok. I didn't install the rear FANs.

Cons: The redundant power supply deliver with the chassis are fare from perfect. First, it's too loud. My Shopvac (it's a huge vacuum cleaner) make less noise. It's not possible to control the FAN speed in anyway. The only solution is to replace them. For this reason I'm removing an egg. I replaced them by two PWS-920P-SQ. According to Supermicro support, SQ mean Super Quiet. I must agree it's supper quite but it's also super expensive !

Also, take note, the powersupply once plugged are always running (in standby mode).

Other Thoughts: In the end, I'm satisfy by the chassis, but I don't understand why it is shipped with this old powersupply.

Careful for home usage

Pros: Very well built, easy to work on, excellent cooling and good drive trays and rails. A really fantastic chassis if you are using a Supermicro board.

Cons: If you have a Supermicro board, you can set the case fans to a surprisingly quiet level but, the 900W redundant power supply fans are so loud as to be unsuitable for a home environment. My rack is in an unfinished basement and the power supply fans in this configuration of the chassis are so loud that I could clearly hear them through the heating ducts in every room of the house.

Other Thoughts: I'm not reducing any eggs for the power supply fans for two reasons: 1) This level of gear isn't really built with home usage in mind. 2) The problem is fixable. I ordered two of the high efficiency PWS-920P-1R power supplies and the difference in sound is night and day. If you are planning to use this in a home, you will almost certainly need to get the PWS-920P-1R power supplies or buy a configuration of the chassis with them already installed. After putting in the new power supplies, I have no complaints whatsoever with this chassis.

Great Case - Redundant Power

Pros: Order this case as a back-up file server for work. First impressions where very great. It came with alot of screws for all HDD's and also came with the slim dvd/cd mount.

There is a ton of room inside the case, pretty much any size of MB will fit in the case. I had to reuse an older non server grade Gigabyte board for the build but it fit at works. Also the Rail kit is very nice.

Also redundant power! It beeps like crazy if only 1 PSU is powered on.

Cons: I did have a problem mounting the rail-kit inside my server rack. It is an older C channel post/uprigts. There are sprint loaded tabs to help lock in the rails to the posts. Anyways the back ends of the rails are easliy removable, just remove 4 screws.

However the fronts are not very easily removable, I had to fold down the end stop tabs to slide the main sliders back far enough to drill out the screws. I would have been nice for them to just make a spot with the metal already cut out incase you wanted to remove these.

Another thing that is sorta lame is the ribbon cable for front power button and lights. I know its nice if you have a SuperMicro MB it plugs right in, if not you need to order the $5 converter cable.

Other Thoughts: So far very happy, the back plane is working great and the LEDs work on the drives without any aditional cables.

I would recommend if not using a SuperMicro MB to order the converter cable for the pins panel pins. Part #:CBL-0084L

Also I would recommend getting the internal HHD bracket, either 1 3.5'' drive or 2 2.5" drives will work, I order Part #: MCP-220-84603-0N

Also you may want to order a 4pin CPU cable extender, the cable barley reached and with the fan shroud it would'nt make it.

Another thing is order a 4pin molex to 2 Sata power, there is only 1 molex plug for a HD.

Great Case & Great Price

Pros: This is a great spacious case that is very well put together. Works perfect with SuperMicro motherboards and I never have any cooling problems. The power supplies are redundant and have an audible alarm if one supply is not receiving power.

Cons: I'm taking one star off because it seems impossible to get to the lower ports on the backplane. You'll need a long pair of needle nose pliers to get to the bottom 2 rows.

Other Thoughts: This is a great all around case with massive expansion abilities. I've just purchased my second one I was so satisfied with the first.

Great Case, needs extras

Pros: 24 hot-swap SAS/SATA drive bays, dual redundant PSUs, tons of room, lots of fans, built like a tank, and GREAT support from Supermicro. Ordered the two extra internal HDD trays and the heatsink bracket for the mobo. Used with a Supermicro X8STE which didn't come with it, nor did the heatsink with the Xeon 5506. Send an email to Supermicro RMA and they will take care of you.

Cons: Had to order extra parts to make it all work. Newegg doesn't sell the 846 that the Areca RAID cards like, nor the correct cables. But once we got the right cables we were then presented with the cabling problem of connecting 24 SATA cables and the sidebands with just 1.5m of cable. However, the 846 had lots of routing options, so in the end it worked out fine. Wait, that's a pro.

Other Thoughts: With Microsoft shipping Storage Server with Server2008, but still limited to OEMs, inexpensive iSCSI SAN storage should just start popping up like mushrooms. Coupled with 1.5TB Seagate drives (oh yeah, I went there), we're pushing 28TB. The 846's have different backplanes to connect all those drives, with Newegg selling just the TQ with 24 SAS/SATA ports. With the Areca 1680ix-24, you need to buy extra cables (mSAS-to-4*SATA with sideband), or just get the 846A or EL1 variant to use Areca's included cables. You should also get the faceplate from Supermicro, as the drive trays are very twitchy and will pop with little effort. The backplane also likes bottom left as drive 0, which is diagrammed in the manual, but if you're like me you tend not to read the manual.

Great case, but not revision K

Pros: I have 5 of these now. Well packaged, well made case. Takes up to 2 extra HDs inside with cheap optional bracket. Includes rails. 24 Hot swap in 4U is unusally dense. Plenty room inside - nice smooth edges, easy to work on. Includes an air shroud to keep your cpus and memory cool. SSI motherboards like the Tyan S7012 can be mounted - all motherboard holes can be used. Excellent single connector for front panel IF you have a supermicro motherboard. Easily removeable fans - just unclip and slide out.

Cons: These are not the latest revision (or at least they weren't when I ordered them a month ago), so they are not designed for 5500 series motherboards. I did not realize this when I ordered them. These are really designed for SuperMicro motherboards. The adapter to convert the front panel header to the common individual connectors is very poor. If you're going to do this you will need to hot glue the little connectors to your motherboard as they are very loose - better do that before you fit the motherboard into the case! Also the clearance for connecting the sata and sideband connectors is pretty tight even with the front fans out. Removing and replacing the backplane is an ordeal - so you're better off trying to squeeze your fingers in there - maybe my hands are just big :)

Other Thoughts: I am using X8DAH+-Fs and Areca 1680ix-24s with these. This case has a 28pin+8pin+4pin - most 5500 motherboards appear to require 2x8pin power connectors. Newegg sell a cheap 4 pin to 8 pin adapter. You can't use Supermicro's SNK-P0038Ps AND the included air shroud - the heatsinks are too tall. S/M tech said you can with a revision K chassis (I don't have a rev K so I can't verify). I've removed the air shroud and temperatures seem OK with L5520s and SNK-P0038Ps. I suspect if I want to use hotter CPUs I'd need to use active coolers. Maybe the 1U S/M coolers would work with the shroud. S/M do a great sas cable - the CBL-0188L - each sata connector is a different length - only problem with the cable is that the sideband ribbon is too short to reach 4 of the plugs on the backplane, leaving you to try to find extensions (I made some, pretty cheaply but not as cheaply as S/M could have added an extra 12" to the ribbon cable on their part).
