What is the advantage of buying a more expensive, electronic DVI splitter or DA to one of these passive splitters if you want to feed two monitors?

This isn't a DVI splitter. It's a proprietary adapter cable that converts the card output (DMS59 - wikipedia/wiki/DMS-59) into dual DVI (there are DMS59 to VGA also). This type of output occurs across a wide range of bundled PC solutions where card space is a premium as it allows dual-video out with a half-height card (and they tend to be fairly weak cheap solutions with passive cooling). If you intend to purchase a computer bundled with such a video output be sure to verify its physical dimensions if you intend to swap out the card (make sure the case has room for a full-height alternative) or be prepared to buy a this adapter cable too. I've yet to see the seller include the cable.

After reading earlier posts and reviewing the pictures, it looks as if the ‘GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB XTREME GAMING OC EDITION’ doesn’t have a DMS-59 jack with its 59 pins, it looks more like a ‘DVI-I Dual Link’ jack. Am I correct? The dual monitor adapter would be completely different if that’s the case.

I Have the evga ftw edition 970. It has 2 dvi ports and not the dms-59
