The unit does come with it's own power supply and USB cord to connect to the ROKU Stick; this unit will also operate receiving power thru the USB port on the Flat Screen TV but I (personal experience) would choose the power supply over the USB port, that way you're insured the proper constant voltage and other properties to operate the device at its manufacturer's optimal performance ratings.  The 3500 is worth the price and more......

do you need internet to use this?

No. Magical rainbows power the streaming channels via UnicornPower TM.
All you do is place the unopened shipping box somewhere in your abode, maybe under the couch or taped inside a sconce, it doesn't matter because UnicornPower TM is smart enough to know where to send the signal.

Oh wait, is this the refurb version you're asking about... Yes! you do need the internet for this refurb, in wifi format.

Roku is great for when you want streaming content (ie Netflix, Youtube, other channels that stream) on your HDMI equipped television without having to run cable to it.  Our household is slowly but surely giving up on cable TV, because we've found with our 3 Roku units everyone can find direct content that appeals to them.  Child (who's big into science) watches Netflix Youtube, and Ted. Wife and I watch NBC, Netflix, Weather, and News.  Just plug in the Roku stick into your HDMI outlet on the television, register a Roku account online, through that account activate the stick that you plugged into the tv, and authorize whatever hundred or so channels you want the stick to access for you whenever you turn it on.  Bye bye cable box, Hello better quality options!

Does my TV need to be a smart TV or  have the ability to connect to the internet through the TV prior to this device for it to work, or will the roku be the receiver of the internet? I'm not tech savvy, I know I can't get internet to my tv but it does have a port for this... Thanks

Your TV will need at least one free HDMI input port available, that's it.
The Roku stick will then connect to your wireless network for it to work.  However, be aware this does not have a "great" receiver and you will need a very strong wireless signal.  I had to buy a repeater and place it very close to the Roku stick.

no contract.  Many Roku services are free but if you want services such as Netflix or the Smithsonian channel you must pay to the service.  A credit card is required to establish an account with Roku but is needed only if paid subscriptions are accessed.

Now watch Netflix on a computer connected to our wi-fi. Will this let me watch it on the big screen tv, using an unused HDMI port?

No, and that's my biggest gripe with this model. It's totally incompatible so you can't even buy a headphone remote separately and pair it up with the stick.

Range for the remote is that of any normal remote but......you can also download the ROKU app for your Smart Phone or Tablet and those options control the stick through the router, effectively increasing the range even more than the remote would allow.

Can you stream video from a storage device on a LAN?

Yes if you use a Roku channel like Plex Media Center you can do this with this Roku Streaming stick, however it does require you to have a Plex server manager running on a PC at the same time.  Your best bet to play your movies or shows on a Roku without having to have a PC running at the same time is to get one of the higher end models that have a USB port. Then you can connect it directly to a HD loaded with your media. You can do this with the older 2XS as well as the Roku 3.
