Cheap NAS, but a handful of downfalls

Pros: This unit is cheaper than some other NAS' available on Newegg. That's the only real pro I can say about this unit.

Cons: -The NAS slows to a halt as soon as multiple users try to use it simultaneously, one user will be able to transfer files at about 30MB/s, while the other is limited to about 75KB/s.
-Although this unit is advertised to have media server capabilities, the media server doesn't work correctly. In my experience, the media server will work alright for a day or two, but then crashes the whole system. Shares and files suddenly become unavailable, and can't be accessed. This can be fixed by shutting off the media server.
-VERY limited permissions - the only permissions that can be set for folders are Full Access, Read Only, or None.
-The default share (disk) is open to all users and can't be removed - it would be nice to get rid of this folder considering you can't set any permissions or change the share name.
-Permissions for shares seem to reset at random times. This can be fixed by going into the web interface of the NAS and re-applying permissions on the share. Very clunky.
-This unit has to manually be turned on after every power outage, it doesn't automatically power up again. A real pain when you're trying to copy files, and then realize that the unit is off because of a past power outage.

Other Thoughts: Would not recommend this NAS to anybody. I bought it because it was a little cheaper than other available NAS', but the few dollars I saved wasn't worth all the headaches I've had with this unit. As others have mentioned, the support for the unit is very poor, and in my experience there is very little support available for this NAS. Now I find myself looking for a new NAS box to replace this poor unit. All in all, I've had a very poor experience with this unit and wouldn't recommend it to others.

Only Very Basic Features. Could be better with Firmware Updates

Pros: I've now had this unit for about a year. I haven't had any of the issue that some have reported like noise or over heating but I am using Laptop drives in the unit.
At first, the unit wasn't the most reliable. Sometimes it would be available and other times not. Recently though, it has been available. My intent for this device was:
1. Home File Data store for family
2. Web Accessible
3. Media Server

Home Data Store Pros
So far it has reliably stored data and the speed to access files on the NAS are acceptable

Web Accessible
You can access the files via the web but there is a serious limitation with User Access rights (see Cons) that make it extremely difficult to recommend this device for this purpose if you have multiple users

Media Server
After making some tweaks to the configuration to auto detect changes in the media files, it does a fine job as a Media Server. I am able to stream movies and music from the NAS even over a wireless network using a Set Top Streaming device, a PS3, and an XBOX. I also connects easily

Cons: Why I cant recommend this device

Home Storage for family
The KD20 is a Linux device and formats your hard drives for Linux (XFS Format). If the KD20 fails, the drives are not readable by a Windows device. This means that you either need to keep a Linux machine around so that you can mount this drive or setup a Virtual Machine running Linux so you can access the drives. So its great that the hard drives can be setup as redundant RAID but if the KD20 fails and you dont have a device to read the drives, what good is it as a backup.

Web Accessible
The device can be accessed via the Internet but you only have two options for user access rights. When you create a folder on the NAS its either setup that All Users can access the folder or Specified Users. If you choose Specified Users and define those users, then that folder is NOT accessible from the Internet. So the only way to make your files accessible from the Internet is to allow everyone on your network to see your files. I dont want any of my kids or any other guest on my home wireless network to be able to view my personal files. This seems like it would be a rather easy fix for a firmware update but it doesnt look like there are plans by Shuttle to update the firmware further on this device since the last update was a year ago.

Company Support
The only English support option is to submit an online form with your question and wait for someone in Asia to answer it.

Other Thoughts: I was really hopeful that this NAS could be a low cost archiving and Media Server solution for my home. Due to the User Access Rights issues and lack of the availability of a Windows driver to read the XFS formatted drives in the event of the Unit failing, I'm hard pressed to recommend this device to the average non-technical PC consumer that this device is targeted for.

Great when it works

Pros: When the device works it works great with no issues

Cons: The device continually drops off the net. I have it connected directly to my router but after a few weeks of use it started disappearing off my net. I tried shutting it off and on multiple time and eventually will reconnect again after a couple of days of trying. Right now I leave it off most of the time and rarely use it because it it totally undependable. I would never recomend this device.

Poor network performance and now failure

Pros: Decent price for a NAS. Started out OK.

Cons: Has always been a little flakey on the network. Sometimes had to reset it in order to see the drive as a network drive. Then today I could not access at all, and finally it decide to not boot. The docs are poor and do not describe the solid red light condition.

Other Thoughts: Previously, I had the data on a old PC machine for about 5 years. The machine was running Windows 2000 and nothing was really wrong and worked well on network. But I didn't want to update it and started to worry about age, so decided to move data to this NAS. Might go back to PC again since you have much more control over it! This NAS you cannot even go into any config utils once it fails to bot onto network. No way to know or try anything,

First bad review for on Newegg

Pros: Good looking & Price, easy to setup.

Cons: Everything else, connection issues, never able to connect after a couple of minutes of inactivity. Horrible manual and troubleshooting.

Other Thoughts: This is my first bad review on newegg, I've been buying tech from this store since a long time and never had such a bad experience with a product like this one. I can't return it because is over 30 days, but I'd love to do it. I think I just lost my money as I have to buy another NAS, but I won't buy it from newegg as a punishment for selling this kind of garbage.

KD20 NAS

Pros: I've now owned the KD20 for over a year with the 2 same 4TB Seagate drives in JBOD. I was concerned about data loss and had backed up everything I put on this NAS, but - so far so good. It still works fine and I can see it and use it from my TV's and media players.

Cons: Still slow write speeds 15-20MBs on a Gigabit connection, that's why It lost an egg. Don't advertise 55MBs write speeds unless you tell us how you made it happen.

Other Thoughts: I think if they gave us a couple of ram slots to fill, they could seriously increase the write speed. Maybe even get it up to the advertised 55MBs speed. I really only use the KD20 as a backup device, media server (not Itunes or Twonky) and print server, so I still haven't used the other bells and whistles. It doesn't turn back on after power loss, but where I live we can lose power several times an hour during a storm so I don't mind that.

Fit My Needs

Pros: PRO
- Economical, purchased at $75, not certain if I would've pay more.
- Unit looks nice and sturdy. Configurable fan spinning activities.
- Consistent transfer rate between 35-40MB/second via 1Gbps ethernet.
- Easy setup and use, unit's Finder software is not needed, Windows 7.
- Screws for 2.5" and 3.5" drives, RJ45 cable, Acronis True Image HD.
- Android mobile app works, in-home video streaming is nice.

Cons: - No USB 3.0 cable.
- FW update might delete/corrupt data.
- Cannot disable default public folders.

Other Thoughts: The unit is primarily use for personal backup, fit my needs. A user and some folders were added, updating the firmware seems to remove the user and folders. Recommend updating to latest firmware, re-select RAID level, re-format drive before using. Inserted two Seagate 4TB @ 5900RPM to reduce heat, so my transfer rate might due to HD's RPM then unit itself.
