Question 1

Would this be a good substitute for having dual monitors? I typically use dual monitors at the office and I am looking for something similar for my home, but don't want to have 2 monitors set up on my desk. If it supports PIP, does that mean I can tell the windows 7 OS to treat it as 2 different monitors (so I can share only 1/2 my screen via Skype)?

It is theoretically possible to set the monitor up that way by plugging it into the same computer with two separate inputs. However, the side by side mode is not quite what you'd expect. You'd get two 3440x1440 displays beside each other with large black bars at the top and bottom. For PiP mode one screen would be small in the corner while the other would be full size. The monitor itself is wide enough for one screen to display almost the same amount of stuff as two 2k monitors.

Tl;dr: If you don't mind tweaking your settings depending on what you want to be doing at a given moment, this monitor can probably fit your needs.

Question 2

Is this 2k because it's the size of two monitors? Does it require scaling to look readable?

This monitor has many more pixels than 2 1080p monitors next to each other, so it is much better than the resolution you are asking about.*
We have 6 of these in our office (this model and the previous one) and no-one using them requires scaling, it's very sharp and we are very happy with the readability and color quality. However, it's possible that someone with sight problems may require scaling as these pixels are smaller than on standard 23" monitors.**

*There are some people who don't prefer this over 2 1080p displays because the resolution is only 180% of the width of a single screen rather than 200%. Where you gain is in the height, this is 1440 pixels high which is approx 133% of the height of a standard display.

**There are other options for someone who wants the ultra wide display but wants bigger pixels. Samsung has one that is 3840x1080px, it is very large - much larger than this one.

Question 3

Could I run the screen from a surface 4 taplet or does it need a more powerful video card?

I don't know but I will tell you this. I was running one with a Wacom Cintiq and I added a second Dell widescreen. All was well for the rest of the evening with both Dells running on a Quatro Efex 4200 video card. When I turned on the computer next morning, it booted up and a minute later there was a big bang. The power supply blew and it took out a $550 motherboard as well. Be careful! I now run each screen from its own video card and have a 1600 watt power supply instead of the 1200 watt one I was using.

In the Overview it claims to be able to operate 2 pc's with a single mouse & keyboard, so does it have an integrated KVM and if not how is this capability performed?

it uses a simple push-button for you to switch between computers (does not automatically sense computers), which works well for me since I sometimes have both on and am switching between them.
