I don't have Windows 8, and according to the spec sheet, it only supports:

Windows 7 
Windows Vista 
Windows XP 
Mac OS X 10.5 or higher

sounds kinda silly to me that it doesn't support Window's 8.

Do you have this product that will work with Windows 8.1?

It works fine with Windows 8.1.  No drivers necessary even. You'll need to provide your own software if you plan to burn movie DVDs though.

Hello, Does it play CDs (regular music, etc) and does it play DVD's (movies etc) ?

Yes, this drive plays CDs and DVDs. It also writes to DVD and CD, however if you choose to use it, I would recommend using an external USB power supply because it may not draw enough power from your laptop USB port. When I received mine, it included a USB cable with 2 plugs (I plugged one into my macbook pro and the other into a phone charger/wall outlet - to get enough power to the ASUS so that it would function without ejecting itself from my computer).

Would like to hook this unit up to a Digital converter box ( Mediasonic / Homeworx unit ) to record off of television?  Would this work or do I have to go back to the drawing board with another idea.  The idea came after trying desperately to find another DVD recorder with a tuner built in.  JOM

I'm not real familiar with this process, but probably not.  This is a simple DVD burner like what comes (or used to come) with most PC's.  What you're looking for is probably a "DVD Recorder", or you could probably transfer your video to a PC then use this kind of burner from there.

i have an Acer 11.6 Chromebook Celeron 2GB ram 32GBS with usb ports no optical drive. Can I use this product or any other external CD drive to record my own CDs?

I don't see why not. I am assuming you have built in burner software or can download it. But it worked on all my Android devices with a micro USB to female full size USB cable.

I have a Asus netbook with win7 and the device worked right away. I tried it on my win8 RT to no action. You have to download a certain media player app. for win8 and have to fish for the right one some are free and some have a fee.

Does this work with linux?

I use it on Windows 10, Linux Mint and an iMac 2018 version.  I don't think it has too much to do with the device, I didn't need any special drivers for it.

I also did not pay even 1/2 this $35 price at the time I got it.

Bought this because it said that it was supported by Mac OSX or higher. All the software that comes with it is for PC only. So I can'y use this to burn CD/DVDs as advertised.

If I'm wrong about this, I'd like to know before I return it. Does anyone know?

If you are referring to the password-controlled and hidden-file functionality, that is software controlled, so if the included software is PC only, you're right--it won't work on a Mac. The compatibility of this type of product usually refers to the hardware, which should be plug-and-play. I bought this as a gift, so I have never tried it on a Mac myself. Any Mac-specific software that provides the same services as the included PC software should be able to interface with this drive.

Side note: The person I bought this for uses it on a Mac--running Windows.
