Can Burn an M-Disc In All Of Its Variants: DVD R (4.7GB), BD-R SL (25GB), BD-R DL (50GB), BD-R TL (100GB) But…

Pros: - Lots of power to attain 16x because it is plugged in to a wall outlet

Cons: - Packaged software, CyberLink Power2Go 8 keeps changing the drive destination to burn

Other Thoughts: If you observe the way they “sales talk” you into buying this product in its Newegg entry, there is not one mention whether it can be fed with an M-Disc for reading or writing. Hop onto Asus website at https://www.asus.com/us/Optical-Drives-Storage/BW-16D1X-U/. At its landing page, it says in the headline, it supports M-Discs. But in the “Specs” tab of the same site, it only mentions just the M-Disc BD-R Single Layer (25GB) only for writing. Apparently, it doesn’t know how to read that kind of disc. And the M-Disc logo is nowhere to be found stamped on the actual physical product itself. If I may opine, Asus is gun-shy. It is scared of the bad publicity it will be inundated with.

It’s a sorry state of affairs. As far as I know, it is the only electrically-powered BluRay external drive (as opposed to the anemic USB power), with the backing of a big and reputable company and it can’t even properly handle an M-Disc! BE14NU40, LG’s entry for a wall-socket-powered external BluRay drive burner is not being offered anymore. It touts full M-Disc compatibility. It even proudly displays the M-Disc logo as part of the physical design of this product. But for some reason, LG has stopped selling it. So, our only hope is Asus, the last man standing in this crusade.

The reason for my fixation with M-Disc is because of my wedding video. The media it is recorded with is DVD which is only good for 10, maybe 15 years, if I’m lucky. Upon learning an M-Disc can survive for a thousand years made my imagination run wild. It is going to be during the final years of our eternal King's millennial reign as a world leader will my wedding video be declared kaput provided it doesn’t get fried by a nuclear blast first during the apocalyptic almost-here 7-year tribulation period!!! Hehe!!!

In buying this BluRay burner, what is my verdict? Is it compatible with M-Disc? It is, without a doubt, an M-Disc capable burner. You can burn and read all M-Disc media: DVD R (4.7GB), BD-R Single Layer (25GB), BD-R Double Layer (50GB), BD-R Triple Layer (100GB). As Asus already stated in its website, it can burn M-Disc BD-R Single Layer (25GB) provided you update its firmware to the latest version. I didn’t upgrade mine because it already has the latest firmware fresh off the factory. The triple layer BD-R or the 100GB version of the M-Disc was tested by one reviewer here and he attests to his success. The 50GB double layer is being packaged by some vendors with this product. What’s the logic of including a 50GB M-Disc in your sales pitch if it can’t be used by the customer?

Finally, the M-Disc DVD R. Remember my wedding video? I was able to copy the first of the 3 DVDs then came here to write my review because I was so excited about it. I have no doubt I am going to be able to copy the other two as well.

But…

One caveat, though. I needed to make a few tries to be successful. No, I didn’t make any coasters. It just that the drive sometimes fails to recognize the M-Disc DVD. It would tell me in a dialog box that it didn't recognize the disc and would advise me to insert another disc that it could read. Mind you, this doesn’t happen with non-M-Disc BD-R blank discs.

I was so frustrated I gave up on CyberLink’s regular app for burning disc, Power2Go 8. It is one of the 3 apps packaged with the drive. Finally, another version of CyberLink was able to duplicate the first disc of my wedding to M-Disc DVD. Voila!

That version of the CyberLink software appears at the lower right corner of my computer screen when I boot up my computer, near where the time and date are on the taskbar. It is the same Power2Go 8 but minimized.

After CyberLink was able to burn the first disc of my wedding, I played it back with the drive and it brought a big smile on my face. I was able to see my wedding, this time in M-Disc DVD version. Next, I tried playing it with my computer’s internal DVD drive and my ancient PS3 in the living room. I was so dumbfounded and happy because both were able to play it!

With that being said, I’m giving it 3 eggs. 2 eggs less because of all the trouble I have to go through. I have proven it can burn an M-Disc DVD. It is only a matter of a bug fix via a driver update or firmware update or whatever.

I think the trouble is the drive and Cyberlink app are always updating. They both go momentarily offline. They both scan, goes “dark” or mini-offline, then updates and refreshes the computer screen. When it does that, Cyberlink changes the destination for burning to the internal DVD burner instead of the external BluRay burner. So annoying! I hope Asus and CyberLink are reading this!

MacOS, writes 100gb BDXL M-Disk straight from Finder, just pick right speed

Pros: - Works great, no errors

Cons: - Its size is huge
- Uses external power adapter, not just power cord

Other Thoughts: Writes straight from Finder on MacOS, just select all files or/and folders to put in the root of the disk and use "Burn to Disk" option, then type label and select write speed not to exceed speed supported by empty media, by default it always shows maximum speed of the device, that may exceed speed of a media. Use Finder shortcut to calculate the size of selection: Command+Option+i

Works great!

Pros: It has more features than any of the others in this price range. Runs fast, and looks great on the desk.

Cons: The door has a minor squeak when it's opening and closing. For the price I paid and the features that I got, I'm completely happy with it.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend this if budget is a concern, like it was for me. Even with all the bad reviews, I'm so glad that I bought it. Just be patient and wait for a deep discount on it (Sale and rebate at the same time).

Decent very fast full sized external burner

Pros: External convenience
Long laptop style power cord doesn't block more than 1 socket like so many usb devices
Fast and Quiet
Stealthed faceplate and switch
Bright power indicator
Decent looking considering its size
Keeps heat production outside of your pc case

Cons: Rear power switch is unintuitively designed slider instead of a toggle, done for looks and likely cost savings, when you cannot see it.
Requires powered hub if one is going to extend the usb, which is quite short by default. I learned the lesson the hard way, burns will fail using a simple usb 3.0 extension cord. A powered hub + 1.5M usb 3.0 extension cord worked fine.

Other Thoughts: People should note that it Is quite big, imagine a laptop folded in half, but you gain the full capability of a desktop drive when the slim models tend to be both slower and louder. My slim Asus dvd-rw usb drive rips cd's at 2x in EAC secure error corrected mode, this does it at 10x.
Be sure to flash the firmware using the utility from the asus website, the one included is quite old, very simple process, runs in windows.
The flush eject button and drop down faceplate design is almost identical to the ones found in Dell's and HP towers.
Testing the quality of an Optical Quantum 6x bluray burnt at 8x using this drive using my internal Asus 16D1HT to run the quality scan showed the burn quality to be identical between the two drives.
Done this way because nero disc speed cannot see usb drives.

Impressed

Pros: This drive is bad a. I can rip dvds and the same rate as an ISO on my SSD. It buzzes with speed and the cd is warm when I take it out. This drive is hardcore.

Cons: A bit large
