what is the wireless max range?

As with any wireless router the surrounding area/environment will greatly affect the range. That being said, I have found the range to be much better than the Linksys routers I had been using. If you have a large area you may have to install a second router to help with the coverage; (I have a larger two story home and have three of them spread over the area which allows me to have really good coverage anywhere in the home).

is it vpn compatable?

Yes. You can either set it up in the router, or use an app on the PC and the router will recognize the VPN access.
