Is the translucent plastic stand permanently attached to the router or can it be removed?

It appears to be attached permanently but it might be removable. It looks like it is glued to the black side panel. There are holes in the clear plastic where screw heads are so unscrewing them probably removes both the clear plastic stand and the side panel.

Question 2

It says windows 8 compatible, does that include windows 8.1?  will be using arris 6141 modem with it.

Yes it is compatible with 8.1.  The interface is via web browser anyway.

Question 3

What's the difference between V1 selection and V2? I'm having problems seeing where the increased price point makes a difference.

The only difference that I can see is in the power supply and power consumption 
The V1 (Which I have) has a 12VDC @5A brick/laptop power supply while the V2 has "Normal" wall style 12VDC @ 2.5A

My house is 1500 sqft.  How far beyond the house will the signal reach?

Question 5

My old DOCSIS2.0 router and cable modem were always ON unless specifically turned off.  However, with my new Netgear N900 modem, it shuts down when the PC is put to sleep or turned off.  thus, laptop and Ipad cannot connect to the internet.  Is there any way to keep the modem alive at all times?  There were no setup instructions with the modem - only pages of terms and conditions.  Thanks.

This router required me to reinstall firmware at least once per month.  This was a difficult process that took a long time and was often difficult to do.  I didn't like the bother and so I replaced it with a D-link router.  Also I noticed that random devices were popping up as using my router.  I think 263 devices were claimed to be connected to my router.  I have a feeling that the wireless got hacked somehow.  I don't know.  I'm not going use these routers again.
