I have had it a little over a year. For some reason my password to login does not work anymore. The password recovery procedure is to use the serial number to log in. My serial number on my refurbished router from Newegg is marked out. What can I do now? I need to open up some ports.

Did you set up password recovery questions? Have you tried the defaults: user "admin" password "password"? If nothing works, you need to reset to factory defaults using a paper clip to push the reset button on the back for 10 seconds while powered on. Then the above defaults should work, but you'll have to reconfigure the router from scratch. Did you save a configuration file on your PC by chance - load this after resetting - if not, make sure you do this time...

For upgrading to R6300v2, do I need a PC or can I use my macbook?

You should be able to use Macbook. You'll need to use Python based telnetenable. You can find it from Google Code. Just search for "netgear-telnetenable". python should be installed by default in any version of OS X. The rest of the steps are the same.

I'm wondering how the 5-star reviewer ratings that talk about this router supporting DD-WRT have done so? If I look at the DD-WRT router database, this model is not in there, and actually appears that no NetGear AC routers are. Factory firmware for now it would appear...

I am using dd-wrt on this device and it's working great. You need to upgrade its firmware to r6300v2 and then install dd-wrt. I can't link to the upgrade instructions, but Google it and you'll find what you need.

Can this unit receive a wifi signal, then re-transmit for a different wifi network in my home or must it receive a hardwire internet input?

You'll need dd-wrt to enable repeater mode for wireless
