Question 1

Hi - interested to hear about range here...can I'd rather do this without a range extender to get to my whole home...can you comment on this?

If you have to use a range extender currently I would assume you will need to continue to use it. The benefit from this unit is the new faster 5GHz  band. Each ear (the pointy thing) is communicating on its frequency band. With this unit using 2.5GHz & 5GHz. The 2.5GHz band handles 802.11 a/b/g/n traffic. While the 5GHz band handles 802.11 n/ac traffic. Although the 5GHz band is faster it has a shorter range than the 2.5GHz.

As stated before, if you are using an extender this unit will probably not help you any. You could try for a device that has more ears,  but they generally assist with noise rather than distance. If you have an issue with distance or something causing a large amount of interference you are limited in your options to an extender/repeater.

what is wrt?

"WRT" is a prefix that Linksys has used for its routers, such as the WRT54G (a popular router about a decade ago). Aside from that, DD-WRT (which you may see when looking at routers) is a Linux-based firmware that can be flashed onto compatible routers, for those who want a more customizable router setup. The "WRT" part of this name is also derived from Linksys routers. A Wikipedia page suggests that "WRT" may have been meant to stand for "Wireless RouTer". Hopefully that helps!

I have a two story house with multiple walls. Would this be an excellent fit for me? My house is about 2500 square feet. We also have about 10 devices connected at any given time for a total of about 18 devices

will this router perform better than a linksys ea4500 for xbox one?

Not sure really, but I will say that ever since I got it, it has performed amazingly well for the three PC's and other smart devices in my home. It has  some pretty good range on the WiFi as well. I would recommend it.

will this work for my satellite internet?

I am not sure what you mean by satellite internet, but if you have a device that acts as an Internet gateway (satellite internet modem, router, etc) that provides wired Internet access via a network (RJ45) jack, the Linksys can work with it.

I'm not sure how a router would be incompatible with another device's OS. Just to be clear, a router literally "routes" network traffic. It is a stand-alone computer with networking ports for Ethernet and a radio transceiver for wifi. It allows all your devices (phones, tables, PC, Mac, Android, etc.) to join a local network and to share your "Broadband" connection to the internet. This one does a lot more, operating on two frequencies at once, offering the highest wifi speeds as well as attached storage that can be accessed by all devices on your local network. The installation disk is mostly an idiot proof way to get the router set up and will run on Windows 8.1 but any browser could be used to do the setup. If you don't need all the features this router offers you could spend less but this is a great piece of kit. Probably a good idea to get a few concepts down before you end up with hardware that exceeds your needs - you'll end up spending more money than you need to. Does this router support 2TB hard drives connected to USB3 port with 
USB3 to SATA3 adaptor cable.
Any experience on it or can one please point me to the Linksys' approved external storage list? Linksys site seems a bit messy on this.

Hello Paul, to answer your question, yes it is compatible, however there are currently issues with the firmware supporting data transferring to external drives. Even updating does not fix this. Hope this helped!
