does this work as rang extender?

yes and no. as far as boosting your wireless signal, no not over wireless. but it can be set in AP mode and connected via ethernet cable to another wireless router and then extend the network.  but depending on what you are trying to do, this router alone might be all you need. I know that with our router upstairs i can go outside of the house about a 100  feet and still connect and use the 5Ghz connection.  the 2.4 GHz connection is able to connect and still be usable in our barn which is around 3 to 400 feet from the router. as well as speeds arent horrible over all, 2.4ghz i get about half the speed my isp provides. which is better than isp supplied modem/router combo. over 5ghz i can get full speed and it might fall a bit when the signal is at its weakest. since ive installed it, i also have not had to restart or reset this router.

Do you need to use a CD for installation?

For any standard application of a router you won't need a CD. It was pretty much plug and play for me. All settings and management features of the router are as any other router I've seen i.e. a browser interface. For more detailed information on setup the CD has a setup guide and a moderately detailed user guide explaining all the many options available with this router.

Joe, don't know what you mean by "version".  It's a model  #  RT-AC1200,  RT-AC1200-40-2G band,  RT-AC1200-40-5G band,  firmware  Rev  9.0.0.4.380_4455.  Hope this helps.

I a trying ting to figure out the chip-set MediaTek  ones are trash  compared to the broadcom when being used to serve media over the network ?   And as usual trying to get any details is impossible here its like they know you will not buy  the bad chip sets .
