Does this machine have a HD LED Touchscreen?

It does not have Touchscreen, but it does make up for it in its other features. If you're looking for any form of gaming just to give you a figure of what it can do, it can run Skyrim on High WITH some graphic enhancing mods(Like some lighting mods and grass textures) at 30-40 fps. Also it can run League of Legends at 60 FPS with everything maxed out. Great for some decent gaming, with a beautiful screen.

Does this laptop have an illuminated or back-lit keyboard? I think it does but I am not sure if this model has it or not. Please clarify, thanks!

Yes and it is great. You adjust it with "fn" + "F3" or "F4" keys. As a side note, this laptop has the loudest speakers I have ever heard on a laptop.

Does laptop itself contain speakers?

It has stereo speakers built in. There is an additional external 'sub' that can be plugged in that makes the sound considerably better. It isn't incredibly loud, but it sounds fairly good for casual listening or simple gaming. I'd recommend some good headphones or a larger external speaker kit for big sound if needed.

Is there any reason I wouldn't be able to install Windows 7 on this laptop?

Also, is it generally durable? Would I be able to lug it around a college campus day after day? Could anyone suggest a good case?

I personally don't know much about downgrading from Windows 8 to 7, but I'm sure this laptop could run 7 fine. I would maybe give Windows 8.1 a chance if you don't need 7 but that just my two cents.

The build quality of this laptop is pretty awesome. The aluminum body is fairly durable, although the backing aluminum is pretty thin, so I wouldn't put mine closed under a pile textbooks. I bought a laptop sleeve for mine at "a store with a big yellow tag for their logo" (not suppose to mention other stores...) for under $30. If you search for "HP laptop sleeve" it's the first one that comes up. It's made by HP, but that doesn't really matter. I
I think you could get by with no case or sleeve if you aren't too worried about cosmetics, but I would suggest one to help extend the life of the machine. Good luck shopping for a laptop, I love this one!

does this have gesture touchpad or regular touchpad?

It has a gesture touchpad that includes two finger scroll, zoom, tilt; three finger "launch pad", navigate pages, and show desktop. It also has some Windows 8 gestures, (like a tablet) from off the pad to on from the right switches apps, from right to left brings up the settings bar, and from top down brings up app settings.

How about the temperature on this one?  Does it stay cool?  I have a laptop that gets so hot I can't set my hands down to type.

This laptop stay quite cool during non-gaming use.  During gameing, it starts to heat up, but the surface doesn't heat up much, most of the heat gets blown out by the fan on the left side.  Unless you're a left handed mouse user and place your hand near the fan on the left side during heavy gaming, it wouldn't be that noticeable.  (I am a lefty and it's a bit uncomfortable to use the mouse near the fan during gaming)

Can I easilly downgrade to Windows 7?

There is no direct downgrade path included with this machine, nor are there Windows 7 drivers readily available (Maybe the 8 drivers would work?)

However, don't let Windows 8 discourage you from this excellent machine. This is my second Asus N-Series, and they have been the most solid laptops I have ever used. With the 8.1 update, and a little learning, Windows 8 is not that different from 7. While at first I considered downgrading also, after having this machine for 3 weeks, I am fully enjoying the Windows 8.1 experience.

I'm stuck choosing between this laptop and Lenovo y510p which has 750m dual card sli but this one has a single 760. Which is a better choice? Both are the same price btw. I'll be using it for gaming as well as everyday tasks.

Okay, to compare these GPUs it really takes some nitpicking down to benchmark numbers. I am no expert by any stretch, but here is just one of many benchmarks:

3DMark (2013) - Ice Storm Standard Graphics 1280x720
GeForce GT 750M SLI: Median = 145338 (42%)
GeForce GTX 760M: Median = 114082 (33%)

So, purely by numbers, the 750M SLI appears to be a superior GPU setup.

Now, my "seat of the pants" assessment, again claiming no expertise is that for a laptop it's plenty fast to run most modern games.

May I digress? I own the N56JR and I love almost everything about it for daily tasks (90% of the time) and gaming (10% of the time).  My biggest gripes are: The hard drive is slow.  Really slow. There is NO RECOVERY DISK nor is there a utility that ships with it, nor does ASUS even sell a recovery disk.  Windows 8's recovery disk is all but useless. Really ASUS? What if your hard drive dies?  Once you successfully install an SSD into this unit it really flies.  Windows 8 boots in literally two seconds.  (I'm not talking about hibernation, either.  This is from a complete shutdown)

I don't know anything about the Lenovo unit except the numbers I looked into for you.

So i've been looking up video cards and comparing them with others to see where they stand usually on gpuboss.  when i look up the nvidia gtx 760 to compare to nvidias GTX 770 or 765 i get 760 vs 770 and the 760M vs 765M.   The 760M seems to run slower, what does the M mean and if I plan to do some higher level gaming should i look for a more powerful card?

I'm playing wow, Eve online and league of legends perfectly on it. The computer is extremely quiet. I put a solid state in it though. The M means it's a mobile card. It is hard to find benchmarks to compare mobile vs desktop video cards, but laptops truly aren't meant for gaming. My desktop has a 770 and I cannot actually make it drop in fps even with 3-4 games running with 3 monitors. The 760m can handle about a fourth of what the 770 can handle. Especially if you put a monitor on the laptop you will notice fps decrease. If you wanted anything better though, it would cost you almost $2k for the next step up. But this asus laptop is virtually the second or third best you can get.  There is not much difference between 765m and 760m. But there is a big difference between 760m and 780m
