I think that you should read the specifications. This laptop does not use a typical SSD drive; instead, it uses 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD

I don't think so. It's a pretty slim laptop so I can't imagine there being another slot for a HDD. You could always use an External HDD or something.

Does this laptop run hot with average every day use?

I use mine mostly indoors. I have never had a heating issue. The only time it slightly gets warm (and it's really not noticeable, I was actively looking for warm temperatures) was when it was in window-filtered sunlight in the car.

Can I upgrade the 8 GB LPDDR3 to 16 GB myself?

The specs say 8gb of memory is max. the PC uses LPDDR3 ram which is the same type used in your cell phone. It's a microchip running at an very low voltage with addition power controls to preserve operating time on a battery. So, No, you can't change the RAM
