How is the overall build quality? The hinges in particular.  Do they seem sturdy?

Hinges appear to be sturdy.  When picking up the computer be sure and pick it up from the base and not the screen.  My wife broke the hinge (rather the base of the keyboard) from picking up another laptop by the screen.

Overall, the performance was poor.  It was sluggish.  I would recommend you check out all reviews online before buying.  I did not. Should have.

It's actually very light compared to my other laptops, don't know the exact weight though. That's one of the things I love about it.

Its well built and boots up in seconds even without SSD.

Yes the Dell Inspiron 11 -3147 is a 2 in 1 where the screen can be folded backwards to use it like a tablet.  Search for it on the manufacturer's product page and you can find pictures of it in that configuration.  (I would post a link or a picture of my own Dell 11 -3147 with the screen folded back on itself if I could).

I'm thinking about upgrading the hard drive to an SSD, and use the included Dell operating system install DVD to reinstall the OS.  However, I can't find a Windows product key anywhere, either on the computer itelf or on the DVD sleeve, to activate Windows once I do the reinstall.  Did anybody's computer come with a Window's product key or has anybody been able to reinstall Windows from the reinstall DVD after replacing the drive?

Jennifer, I wondered the same thing - there was no product key with my disc either. But I suggest that you simply ghost or clone your old drive to the new SSD with all partitions whether visible or hidden. I do this on SSD upgrades all the time and the system will appear identical when you reboot (except it will be a lot faster). Several good freeware utilities out there to do this, or you can buy a robust disk manager.

No lit up keyboard but with on screen keyboard it's easy to use in the dark. Physical keyboard gets disabled when it's in upside down position. No need to worry about accidental input.
