What can I expect in actual battery life?  I'm reading under 5-hour battery life.  Also am reading that front facing camera producing poor quality images, any opinions?.

I've only had my Switch Alpha for a couple days. Yesterday I had the tablet running on battery all day, from about 9am to 5pm. By that point I was at about 34% battery. I wasn't "constantly" on it and I wasn't running video but I was doing typical tasks; cleaning off bloatware, updating drivers, installing Office 365, surfing the web. I'm sure the batter will drain faster as I begin to use apps like Excel, Word, Outlook and so on. So far I'm pretty happy with battery life as seen from my first days use. But no, it's not going to be 9 or 10 hours like an iPad.

Can you update the SSD?

I haven't seen any tear-down videos or articles, but it does appear you can replace the back plate so that would indicate that it's reasonably easy to remove.  Whether or not you can fit a different SSD in their remains to be been but I'd say you have a better than average chance of doing so. Probably will void your warranty though. I'd just add an SD Card if you need more capacity.
