The Zalman 9700 CPU cooler offers high-performance cooling in a unique design. The heatsink and fin assembly are made from 100 percent copper for improved heat dissipation. The base is built of both copper and aluminum, keeping the overall weight of the unit down while providing optimal heat transfer to the triple set of copper pipes. The curved heat-pipe design allows them to draw twice the amount of heat away from the processor.
At the center of the aerodynamically optimized tunnel created by the fins is a 110mm, blue LED fan. Included is the company's Fan Mate 2 fan-speed controller. In Silent mode the fan spins at 1,250rpm and creates 19dBA of noise, but when you need extra cooling for demanding tasks you can shift it up to 2,800rpm to quickly force heat away from your CPU and other system components.
The 9700 is compatible with both Intel's LGA 775/1155/1156 and AMD’s Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940 platforms. All the clips and backplates are included so there's nothing else to buy to get the unit attached to your motherboard in minutes. A tube of Zalman's own thermal grease is bundled in as well.
Unique Heatpipe Design Three innovative and curved heatpipes provide a heat transfer capacity matching that of six heatpipes designs for maximum performance.
Aerodynamically Optimized Heatsink Layout and Ultra-Slim Fins A 100% copper heatsink with an aerodynamically optimized "tunnel" design and 0.2mm ultra-slim fins maximize heatsink efficiency with minimal weight and smoother airflow for optimum cooling.
Adjustable Fan Speed Controller The bundled adjustable fan speed controller (Fan Mate 2) enables manual fan speed adjustment ranging from 1,250rpm to 2,800rpm and provides a silent mode and low-noise mode for an optimum balance between silence and performance.
Blue LED Lighting The ultra-quiet 110mm fan produces brilliant illumination during operation for eye-catching fun.
Universal Socket Compatibility As an all-in-one solution for PC systems, the ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED features broad compatibility with all AMD Socket AM3/AM2+/AM2/754/939/940 and Intel LGA 775/1155/1156 platforms.
Pros:
- Works well for a purely heatsink + fan combination. The radiator vanes are razor thin, almost worryingly so (this is a good thing for cooling)
- Looks very pretty
- Fantastically easy to clean with compressed air
- Fan has a variable speed controller which mounts to the outside of your case. Allows you to manually control the fan speed to reduce noise and wear when you don't need the full performance.
Cons:
- This beast is simply massive. There's no other way to put it. Once it is installed, working around it to install other components can be frustrating; Namely case fans, GPUs and memory. Every time I rub on those flexible, bouncy heat sink vanes I cringe.
- Installation (for AMD, no idea about Intel) is just as frustrating and painful as any other aftermarket cooler. Uses a backplate which can be irritating to install if your case does not have a little window on the reverse side. My CM Storm mid-tower has a hole through the back of the case specifically designed for this work so I don't have to take out the motherboard. Once the backplate and adapter are installed on your motherboard, getting the metal clip to catch on both latching points is a pain.
Other Thoughts: With most CPUs, it is necessary to upgrade your stock CPU cooler if you intend to play games with modern 3D graphics. Newer CPUs seems to be shipping with far better stock cooling, so that may be changing. As far as your choices go, this one is good because it looks a lot better than most Fan/Heat Sink combos, offers good performance, and isn't fantastically expensive. However, if you have a CPU that is two or three years old and you're looking to play the cutting edge of video games with 3D graphics, you will be better off using a closed-loop liquid cooling system. Just make sure you double-check your space requirements and make sure your case can fit the radiator. Cooler Master in particular sells both cases and coolers, so as you would expect, these products are highly compatible.
Pros: It just runs 7 years latter still keeps my processor cooled. purchased in 2010
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: looking to upgrade my PC soon. hoping i can put it on an AM4 board.
Pros:
-has lasted 11 YEARS without EVER failing, rattling, or losing LED brightness
-over that time, it kept an AM2, then an AM3, then an AM3+ processor running beautifully cool
-fantastic bearing life
-no rust, despite living in a VERY humid environment
-may feel heavy, but when properly mounted, will never harm your processor...even on 950 mile road trips :)
Cons: -the original version of this, from 2007 (and prior), came with only the AMD socket back plate/mount, and so despite the current version stating compatibility, my old, and still functional cooler cannot mount on my new MSI board with sock 1151
Other Thoughts: -I've been in contact with Zalman and Newegg tech support...Zalman does not sell the back plate/mounts separately, no matter the model/part number
Pros: I've order parts to build a new pc and going to reuse this from a pc I built in 2007, it's still running great!
Cons: none
Pros:
Big Copper Fins with A large Fan. Blue led looks cool. High grade material was used, still going strong since 2008!!
Bought it for an AMD 5000 Black Brisbane edition in 2008. Have used is on an FX6300 and now amd 8350!! Still cools everything just fine!
Cons: Very hard to clean, finds are very sharp!
Pros: Bought this back in 2009 still working and still in use 2016
Cons: a little louder than before maybe because its 7 years old
Pros: Copper fins maybe better than aluminum
Cons: none yet
Other Thoughts: Actually a Question IF anyone can answer I want to install it in a LGA 1151 with a i5 6600k I wonder if that would work .Product box says compatible with LGA 1156 and 1155 but Zalman.com pdf says 1151 also ...?Opinions?/

Pros: bought from newegg in 2007 and its been re-purposed several times now and the fan still runs smoothly. Cooled everything i threw out it with out a sweat. Currently working flawlessly in a server. It will probably outlive me.
Cons: it wasnt cheap if i remember and is hard to find anymor. may even be disco'd?
