Does this need to be upright or can it be laid on it’s side (As on a shelf)?

It’s theoretically okay, but may reduce the life of the UPS batteries or cause it to shut off while it is providing backup power during an outage, as the cooling works by using the vents on both sides of the UPS (convection cooling). Maybe see how hot it gets during a power outage or just unplug it and put it on its side. But as far as the batteries leaking or the UPS catching on fire, I wouldn’t worry about that.

photo on back shows 5 battery/surge and 5 surge only plug ins. Add says it's 6 and 4. Which is it please?

It has 6 bat w surge and 4 with only surge. Top outlets on both sides are batt.
