Not very dependable 05/12/2013
This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V100 2.5" 128GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV100S2/128GZ
Pros:
An improvement over HDD speeds.
My Core 2 system with DDR2 loads games as fast or faster than an i5 with DDR3 and WD Black HDD
I bought this drive just after the WD flood - I needed a boot/apps drive and I had a choice between a $100 500GB HDD or $130 128GB SSD...
Cons:
Well... HD Sentinel finally dropped the health of this drive from 100% to 97%. I know, sound the alarms... But the big picture is bigger than that.
I've been having issues with Windows running a pre-boot chkdsk about once a month on this drive, and finding corrupt files and such. Occasionally, after completion, it will boot and have corrupt drivers, broken applications or other issues. Usually, I've been able to do a system restore and solve the issue, but not this last time. The last time, whatever data got lost, was unrepairable (AND it made any internet-related application, like a browser, unusable). I had to re-install Windows.
Overall Review:
I realize it seems kinda moot to do a review on a discontinued product... But these things are probably still floating around elsewhere.
To suppliment my problem in the cons section... I really didn't want to reformat the thing and I tried many things:
-Doing a system restore
-Using SFC
-Using a live CD to replace what I thought were the corrupt/missing files
-Using the Windows install CD to do a full repair by using "upgrade"
-Other stuff I may have forgotten
I'm probably going to go search for the firmware now, since reading the review replies reminded me of that. Hopefully, that can prevent future issues, or else this drive will be RMA'd.
Manufacturer Response:
Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. There is a firmware update available for the SV100, it can be found here: http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/downloads?product=SV100S2&filename=SV100S2_64_128_120504 . This update will reset the drive and it is highly recommended to back up your data prior to applying the update or the data it will be lost. Please read the instructions fully prior to updating the drive. If your SSDNow has the number "120504" on the bottom right corner of the label then the firmware is already up to date, if it does not have that number then it is highly recommended to update the drive to prevent possible failure. If you have any other questions, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.
Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.
