5 out of 5 eggs Handheld for PC Gamers 08/13/2013

This review is from: NVIDIA SHIELD Portable

Pros:

- Extremely good build quality. Very solid, no creaking sounds whatsoever. Heavy in a good way, not fatigue you heavy, but just enough to where you know the device is quality and not cheap.

- Awesome built in controller. I actually ended up preferring the built in controller of the Shield to the 360 controller.

- Beautiful screen. 1280x720 (720p) this resolution is completely adequate for a 5" screen.

- Great games from the android side of the house, and the streaming service adds a lot of value. Playing Dead Trigger is just awesome on the Shield. Streaming games from Steam is also very enjoyable. So far I've streamed the following games with great results: Skyrim, Sniper 2, Just Cause 2, and Dishonored. (I actually played through the majority of Sniper 2 from the Shield.)

-Blazing fast compared to any other android device. You can tell the device is made for performance. The presence of a fan (which is completely silent) should tell you the thing has quite a lot of power.

-Great features - HDMI out, Micro SD expansion, and impressive built in speakers. The battery life of the Shield is also very impressive; much better than I had expected.

Cons:

- Nothing that I can think of. Price was very reasonable for what you're getting, and the device itself doesn't disappoint.

Overall Review:

I'm a PC gamer through and through, but I wanted a handheld device, so I bought a PS Vita a little over a year ago to fill that desire. I gave that thing so many chances and tried so hard to like it, but I just couldn't. I wasn't really big into the Sony exclusives and on a whole the games didn't impress me. After I got a glimpse of the Nvidia Shield I decided to sell my Vita and get one of these. I definitely have no regrets.
The Shield is Android, and so is open to almost limitless software including emulators(Which work great on the Shield). Sony viciously forbids any kind of none approved software on the Vita.
Another thing worth mentioning is the price point of games. PS Vita games range from $19.99 to $49.99, and you often don't get what you bargain for (Black Ops). Whereas on the google play store, you will rarely pay more than $4.99 for a game, and many of the absolute best games are completely free (Dead Trigger).
Anyway, I believe for these reasons the Nvidia Shield is the perfect handheld for PC Gamers. Even if you end up not using the streaming service, which I really love, it's still amazing as a stand alone handheld gaming system.
