This review is from: MASSCOOL UHB-2233 Aluminum 2.5" Black SATA I/II USB 3.0 External Enclosure
Pros:
• Looks nice
• Finding uses for old miscellaneous storage drives
• Avg. ~30Mb/s on USB2.0 with a 5400RPM drive
• Functions without the enclosure, which is nice for troubleshooting a 3.5" drive without a hotswap cage or dock
• Plug and play*
Cons:
• Tiny screws easy to strip with cheap, warped included screwdriver.
• USB port on the drive is VERY weak. If you aren't paying attention you can easily insert the plug upside down. The 'flip, find resistance, flip, insert' trick is not your friend for this enclosure.
• Won't detect on any of my USB3.0 ports across 4 devices, not even an unknown in device manager.
• Won't accept some of my spindle drives, just show up as "unknown device" in the device manager on Win7, shows as a /dev on Linux but can't recognize it as a drive
• Won't accept ANY of my SSD's, presenting the same issues as some of the spindle drives do
Overall Review:
I had hoped to use these to both repurpose many of my old drives as externals and to use in troubleshooting without needing to set up a hotswap cage or a cumbersome dock. This was going to be a tool I'd take everywhere with me when I did on site computer repair, now it's looking like a cheap solution in making a 300GB external for my personal travel bag.
Knowing what I'm getting, I'd consider 3 more just to get those older drives back into a workflow. Also, considering my experience has been less than stellar, I'd just as soon find an enclosure by another brand (which would be necessary anyway, being as I'd still have 2 other drives that don't function with this enclosure).
