NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LOCKING CABLES 02/12/2015
This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX
Pros:
Fast & quiet - previous machines I built with these drives (500GB &1TB) are very responsive and was happy with them. Price per GB isn't much more than standard performance drives and they now come in huge capacities. My "raptors" are better, but these were close at a reasonable cost and higher capacity.
Cons:
I read all the Newegg reviews when I bought this in September - no mention of the locking SATA cable issue (there are several now). I first thought my drive had a mfg defect - no "shell" around the SATA data and power connectors. When I studied the Newegg photo it was the same - never crossed my mind to even check that it had a "shell". Contacted WD and they told me this is done for better "backplane" compatibility (whatever that means). This is supposed to be a performance DESKTOP drive - and desktop use requires the use of a cable - preferably a locking cable (really a requirement for my case). Really like the performance / capacity / price of this drive but I'm not pleased that my cables don't lock - thinking of getting a 3-4TB Seagate instead.
Overall Review:
My drives mount at 90 degrees in my case which means I must use a 90 degree cable to allow case side to close. My 90 degree cable with a bend doesn't stay connected to this drive very well - actually fell off once. WD told me that there is a special cable that will work with these drives - but told me they don't have any. They gave me a part number and some vendors to try but none of them have it either. I am currently planning to make my own "Jerry Rig" cable retainer.
