How we started
Autonomous has been a company driven by technological innovation since its inception in 2015. Starting out as a group of people with a firm understanding of both software and hardware, our first product was a robot assistant named Maya whose job was to make lives easier, more convenient and smarter.
Making Maya brought us to the realization that our calling was to create smart, productivity-hacking products. Most people tend to think of software or apps when thinking about productivity, but for us, it was all about starting with what we touch and experience every day; the physical products that enrich our lives.
Our design philosophy
It was time to apply our philosophy to our product design. What we believe truly affects the way we create and for us, it’s all about practical, functional minimalism. We firmly believe that the user experience is the most important factor to take into consideration, so while products should have a great degree of function, they should also be intuitive and simple to use, to unleash their full potential.
All our pieces of furniture are built around this way of thinking - simple, sleek lines with a great deal of technological innovation in their design and functionality, all to provide people with some of the most advanced and ergonomic desks and chairs on the market.
Premium build quality
A great design is meaningless if the final product isn’t made from the right materials. We honor all our designs with the highest quality materials that fulfill our strict criteria. We look for three things when we source materials: unwavering durability, the ability to create a comfortable user experience and affordability for the end-user.
Tried, tested, certified
The final part of the design process is the testing. On our side, as we own our factories and work closely with engineers, we are able to ensure that our products meet our high standards and are ready for use before they’re shipped. Our top-quality products go through a stringent QC process aimed at fixing anything overlooked in the design phase. In addition, we make sure that all our pieces are independently certified by BIFMA for their strength and safety.
What makes us different
What separates us from our competition isn’t just the excellent value we offer with our products or our innovative design, it’s how we’re wired. We never hesitate to try new things and when we land on an idea we like, we become persistence personified. Every step is equally valued: from research to building the prototype, to the testing phase, to general release, to taking every piece of feedback into consideration so we can do an even better job next time. We release new pieces every year and we never rest on our laurels.
2015 saw us debut the SmartDesk on Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. We were able to raise approximately $400,000 to get this show on the road.
2016 allowed us to introduce the first ErgoChair, which received excellent reviews and went on to sell in excess of a million units.
2017 was a year of growth. We grew by 160%, reaching 38 countries and serving 56000 clients with 89000 desks.
2018, our first real setback. We launched SmartDesk 3 but it didn’t live up to our expectations. We took a lot from the project, evaluating the feedback of customers, assessing our strengths and weaknesses and working hard to learn from our mistakes.
2019 - the launch of our first L-Shaped SmartDesk and new Kinn Chair, which sold 874 and 1137 units respectively in their first month.
