I have an older acer system that happened to have a second HDD slot although it was not advertised. Is that the same case with this system, or does only have one HDD slot?

Yes and no. The answer to your question is NO! However, there is an m.2 slot under the main board, and if you install an m.2 SSD you need to be very careful with the connections, especially if its your first time taking a laptop apart. There is 1 HDD bay and 1 m.2 slot. I picked up a Samsung evo 500gb m.2 for it, and left the hard drive in. It was a little tricky cloning the HDD and getting it configured right. My job title is a Desktop Technician at work, by the way. If you have never disassembled a laptop before, and aren't a tech or have a friend that can do it, I'd recommend against it. You have to take half of the laptop apart just to reach the hard drive bay. By the way. The included hard drive is VERY slow. It was night and day difference on mine. 45+ second boot time to almost instant.

If I get this without an SSD, can I add one later?

i have a similar 15.6 inch model, and everything is stuck to the bottom of the case, meaning that the keyboard has to be lifted off to install anything. there is an M.2 Slot, but there is no extra 2.5 harddrive bay.
