No. Simple answer. Its a laptop. Desktops can be made more powerful for cheaper. Just the way it is

Can you run this laptop on a single power supply if your only doing small tasks ie. not gaming?

If you are not in performance mode, or overclocking then I do believe it will work. It will not last hours, but mine run for about an hour or so.

what kind of travel cases are available for a laptop of this size?

It comes with a travel case. It's basically a giant suitcase, so don't worry about any dents or scratches! ;)

what is the of this laptop if you can just build a better and cheaper one?

you cannot build anything like this in a laptop. I have a 10k Alienware 18.4 one of the last ever made. it is epic but this unit makes my laptop look like a pos. I have spoken with many people at Alienware and I will not name people just because professional respect. they and other believe the unit is over built and the 300 made will never sell. Last I have heard they have had 10000 re quests for a laptop with full purchase orders. not bad for a company that has never had such a great unit.

Is this even worth getting?

In my opinion, no. You can custom build a desktop pc that has the same or even better performance than this laptop for less money.
