Great While It Lasted... What Happened Acer?

Pros: - Light-weight and slim for the performance
- Casing hides any finger prints or smudges
- Card and processor powerful enough to handle pretty much any game you can throw at it, even at its age
- Keyboard feels pretty nice for a laptop
- Back-lighting is a nice feature

Cons: - Main components failed in 3 years time, only used for gaming for about 1
- Battery life (but really, who doesn't carry their charger?)
- Very port heavy on the right side
- Built quality itself is.....well, it's all flimsy feeling plastic, but I guess that's why it's so light
- Acer Customer Support (when your warranty runs out)

Overall Review: I got this laptop back in 2015 and was blown away by its performance. At the time, Acer could do no wrong by me: I had specifically bought this laptop over an ASUS one I saw because I saw and heard about how well Acer was with customer service. Well, right at the new year, only about 3 years later, the integrated graphics started to go out on me. Shortly after, I had symptoms of a failing CPU of all things. Opening up the laptop showed no blown capacitors, so I opened a repair ticket with Acer hoping for something; surely they would help out if they had put in a faulty CPU, right? Nope; something must have changed with customer service because all I got in response was that my laptop was out of warranty and they'll have to charge me to fix it. No follow up call, no email offering solutions, not even a reply offering a half baked solution like "unplug it." What the hell? What company is so flaky about their products main components that they won't even touch you with a 10 foot pole after the 1 year warranty? (Which by the way, 1 year?!?! That's it?! The blasted brake pads on my car that WILL wear out have a lifetime warranty, but the CPU which should've lasted WAY longer only had 1?!?!)
I want to recommend this laptop, I want to recommend Acer, for the time that it lasted, it had exceeded expectations. At the time, Acer seemed to have great customer support. But if all I can get out of the thing is a year of gaming and 2 years of use as an office laptop, without so much as a "we're sorry" from Acer, I just can't recommend them to anyone. 3 years out of a laptop that costs this much is just plain pitiful.

Powerful laptop for the price; still working great after 3 years

Pros: - Amazing specs for the price
- Amazing specs for the price
- Amazing specs for the price
- Good IPS LCD display
- Thin & light chassis
- Reliable. Hasn't broken in 3 years

Cons: - Various Minor hardware design annoyances
- USB Ports all on the right side
- Gets a little hot during intensive gaming
- It definitely needs an SSD upgrade, and will run blazingly fast afterwards

Software: It comes pre-installed with lots of crapware. This is easy to remedy. As with all new consumer (non-signature) laptops, you'll definitely want to reinstall Windows 8.1 once you get the laptop. Just make sure you download all the necessary drivers ahead of time.

Overall Review: Update: I've now owned this for 3 years, and this is by far the best gaming laptop I've had due to reliability. It's not the most powerful gaming laptop, but it's definitely been a solid experience, and I haven't had any major issues with it.

Spec-wise, the laptop is beautiful. It has a powerful GPU (960M) and CPU, so I don't have any complaints there. It's quite thin for how much power is contained in the case, and the price of $900 is amazing. I highly recommend that you upgrade with an M.2 SSD and perhaps 16GB of memory. A 5400 RPM HDD as the primary disk just isn't acceptable on a gaming laptop these day.

Keyboard: I impressed that the keyboard is very solid and doesn't bounce. The biggest annoyance is that the caps lock, scroll lock, and num lock keys don't have LED indicators. That's such an oversight. The touchpad is solid, though I wish it had separate left/right buttons, but it's not a big issue since gamers never use touchpads.

Chassis: The chassis is solid and light. It's a bit annoying that the 3 USB 3.0 ports are all on the right side along with the power and audio-out ports. There's a bit of space between the ports, but the positioning isn't ideal. I use a wired mouse on the right hand side, so the cables tend to get tangled.

Sound quality: The treble is fine. You can turn up the bass much louder than on most other laptops, but it sounds noticeably overblown and distorted even at mid-volume. I'm not impressed with the advertised "Dolby" sound. I'd rather have a weak bass than a distorted bass.

Display: It has an extremely good FHD IPS LCD matte screen. No complaints here. The contrast is noticeably high.

Temperature: The top of the laptop does tend to get hot during moderate gaming, but it's bearable. However, when I ran a full-load GPU benchmark test, the keyboard became way too hot to touch. I suspect overheating is going to major hardware problems later on and shorten the laptop's & battery's overall lifespans. Update: It actually runs fairly cool in most games even today. That GPU benchmark was just extreme.

Noise: It's quiet, which is good. On the other hand, the fan is a bit too quiet when gaming. I think I'd rather have a more powerful fan than overheating issues.

Upgrading hardware: Replacing the simplest of hardware parts (e.g. memory or hard disk) requires you to unscrew the bottom and remove the keyboard. While you can do this within 20 minutes, it's annoying that the internals aren't easier to access. After all, this is a PC laptop, not a bloody MacBook. Also, if you're going to get an M.2 SSD for the laptop, you'll also want to find an extra M2 x 3mm screw to hold it in the slot.

Minor annoyance: When the laptop is sleeping, the audio port still outputs static to external speakers, so I always have to disconnect the cable. I believe this is because the audio out and audio in are combined into 1 port.

Lastly, some customers have complained about failing WiFi, but I have yet to experience that issue.

Amazing PC

Pros: I've had this PC for a few years. It still runs like no other PC that I have owned. My only complaint is that my son found out how good of a gaming PC this is so I hardly ever get to use it. I steal it from him every once in a while and still love it. Acer is so underrated.

Cons: battery life sucks but I always have it plugged in. It's a non-issue for me.

Overall Review: Definitely, recommend this PC.

Hasn't held up well

Pros: - When brand new it was fast

Cons: - After a year, it slowed WAY down.
- After a year or so, the battery can hold a charge for only about 45 minutes
- Lack of buttons on the track pad is super annoying

The Reviews for This are Horrendously Biased

Pros: Powerful - plays every game I've thrown at it very well on at least medium, older games like Skyrim, GTA, Shadow of Morder run perfectly on high.
Very sleek, mature, and professional looking. Back-lit red keys are eye catching in a darkened room.
Gorgeous screen, I couldn't stop ogling over it when I first powered it up
Powerful speakers - very impressive
Not as hard to upgrade as some people say. I added a low-voltage 8gb Samsung ram card and an Samsung M2 SSD to use as a boot drive and to load-up my top 3 open-world games quickly
i TB RPM drives holds all my media and work files.

Cons: In a rapidly evolving tech economy, these powerhouse laptops are slowly and steadily one-upped by slightly more powerful machines. It's annoying seeing the if I'd have paid just $50 more I could have had a GTX970 instead of 960 a few month down the road

Overall Review: The reviews I've read for this laptop are horrendously biased towards isolated mechanical issues likely due to shipping. The way I use this machine:
Home - I have it perched on an LED lit cooling fan angled towards me along the left side of an L-shaped desk. Here, it functions as an all-in-one entertainment/work station as the right-side ports are neatly plugged into my peripheral USB hub, HDMI to a 40" display, and speaker jack hooked up to a wired surround sound. I sit back from the screen with an external mechanical keyboard in my lab and gaming mouse on a stand to the right of my chair. From here I can sit back and operate the laptop like a high-powered PC.
School - I'm a commuting pre-med student at an undergrad university. I do a lot of data-heavy lab work on Office, DataStudio, MEGA, LoggerPro, and more. When I'm on the go I just disconnect all the cables from the one side of the laptop and grab my already bundled power brick right behind it's perch and slide the incredibly slim-bodied, sleek, professional looking machine into a shoulder bag and drive to campus to start my work for the day. The sexy red LEDs under the keyboard are subtle hint that my working computer is a powerful gaming rig tucked into a mature and beautiful body.

Pros: -Decent capabilities

Cons: Fan broke within 8 months, some keys were not optimally functioning right out of the box, overheats, poor battery life, body smudges, poor WiFi.

Sending it in for repair at the moment, however I have read that the customer service is horrendous when it comes to warranty claims. When I spend this amount of money on something, I expect durability and good build quality. First and most likely last time I buy an Acer.

Speedy but with hardware issues

Pros: - Nice laptop
- Nice processor and good performance

Cons: -Creeky screen when opening
-Lots of bloatware
-Not very solid in terms of hardware

Overall Review: As soon as I recieved this laptop I charged it up and turned this badboy on. First thing I noticed was that the screen had a bright spot in the top right corner. This was due to a slight bend in the screen. I ignored this as I thought it would be okay....6 months later it is still there and only disappears when I bend the screen back.

The other month, I noticed the right arrow key was loose and wasn't functioning properly. Turns out the key broke and snapped in the inner mechanics. I have NEVER dropped or banged my laptop around. Very disappointed in that.

Laptop is decent at best. Runs slower than when I first got, collects a lot of dust, and the WIFI often goes out, and I've had some serious problems with the computer freezing up forcing me to do a hard reset.

I will either be attempting to send this back for a refund or send this in for repair and hope my warranty covers all my issues.

Pros: IPS screen, stylish design, lighted keyboard, cool, quiet, good ports, perfect size for anything

Cons: Battery life, slow hard drives

Overall Review: I don't use it much for gaming, I use it for photo editing and graphics work. I bought it for the IPS screen which are hard to find in a laptop. Everything is good on it, but the hard drives seem very slow. Takes a long time to load apps and boot up.
