Is this a refurb unit?

I'm not sure why that would matter at this price range.  I highly doubt  that a motherboard or processor of this quality is worth bringing back.   That being said,   beware that I could not install a new OS as I could not boot CDROM or external medium,  despite several BIOS configurations .  Other than that, it's serving it's purpose as a media server very nicely.

Why does this desktop have a laptop processor?

I can't speak to exactly why the manufacturer would do this, but my assumption is that it reduces cost in manufacturing. I bought this system for my parents as they were looking for a cheap system just for email and Internet usage. It does exactly that. But I wouldn't expect it to do much more. Installing Office 2010 took a significant amount of time due to the HDD not being a SSD. But the system runs well and is exactly what they were looking for.

does it come with dvd rw and can I buy extra ram ddr3 to up grade.  will windows 8.1 run the dvd player without buying extra software?
