The disc drive slot on the right side has a disc drive delete panel (just a plastic piece) that just fills the hole and provides structural integrity. If you want another hd, you can buy a drive caddy and put your drive in there. I got a ssd to boot from and use the hd that comes with the laptop as storage.

This will easily run photoshop smoothly. It wouldn't be necessary, but you could always purchase some extra RAM, it has an extra slot for a stick.

No, office is installed but not activated, I think this allows you to open and read limited files but not write or create anything.  Luckily I have access to cheap $10 activation codes through my work benefits program.

does this come with a recovery partition or original windows disc?

The laptop does NOT come with a Windows CD. However, much of the system can be maintained by the Acer care center app. It's mostly non-intrusive. If you have a complete system fail, you can always reset the Laptop to factory settings using the "shift" restart or ALT methods.

Some people have said that their units came with an upgraded i5 7200u processor instead of the listed i5 6200u. Along these same lines, has anyone received a unit from this listing which had an NVIDIA GeForce 950M graphics card instead of the listed GeForce 940MX?

Only the board with the i7 has the 950.  So that would only happen if the wrong entire main board was switched in on a refurbished model.  There is no Acer board with an i5 and 950, whether sky or kaby lake.

Is this have 12 hour battery life? Is the keyboard backlit? Is there a open bay for a 2.5 notebook storage drive?

The battery life is about 8-10 hours of light use (like a work day where you use it off and on).  It will go about 5 hours playing HD movies and just over 2 hours using the dedicated graphics.  The keyboard is backlit, but it goes off after a few seconds of inactivity, so it is not constantly lit.  This question section seems to cover several similar models, but the one ending in -53VG that I have comes with the m.2 slot filled and an empy, available 2.5" drive (that's a normal laptop drive) slot next to it.  Easily accessible through a panel secured by 3 screws on the bottom.  I did not require a caddy or kit for the add-in drive as it fit perfectly with a static shield I already had.
