Is the screen glossy or kind of "matte"?

Glossy; it can be reflective under some conditions, like trying to view something dark while sitting in a sunny room.

The plastic housing and stand are glossy as well.

Is it VESA mountable?

Nope, no VESA mounting holes on the back.

Also not too happy with this monitor, I'd keep looking.....

When my laptop goes to sleep, the monitor also goes to sleep, however it does not come out of sleep. I have to manually power cycle the display. My older Dell monitor connected identically via HDMI did not exhibit this 'feature'.

Does this include all the cables, like the vga and hdmi?

Interestingly enough, when I purchased this 2 years ago it came with both VGA and HDMI cables.
From the available image and other responses though, it looks like it comes with VGA only now :(

when i purchased this monitor i was under the impression that it could be tilted.. but my stand is completely fixed. any ideas anyone?

You can tilt it. I have two and they both have the ability. It may be a little stiff . Just take care in doing so

Where is the speaker plug in?

When using an HDMI cable the sound and video signal are both sent through that cable. A separate speaker cable is not necessary.

I see it has an HDMI input, but does it also come with an HDMI to HDMI cable to connect to my computer or would I need to purchase that cable separately?

I bought some of these monitors.  They only come with the D-sub cable, no hdmi.  I had to buy it separately.

What is the refresh rate on this monitor? 60hz or higher?

The manual states 56 - 75 depending on the mode (VGA, VESA etc).

Acer says it is 16x9 (H:V) in on their support website and I believe them.

Text is a not as sharp as it should be on my computer (excellent video card), and the viewable image doesn't go all the way to the edges.  (3/4" shy all the way around) Tried the controls to expand it vertically and horizontally, but, they don't seem to work at all?   Am i doing something wrong?

I agree with Davendra that using HDMI instead of VGA from the computer out to this monitor will give you the best resolution.

Yes, it has HDMI input. However, it does not have sound.
