I'm new to flash drives. I have an older computer. Can a 3.0 be used with a 2.0? I may not have 2.0, how do I find out?

Anything USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 is interchangeable however the 3.0 jump drive will perform significantly faster in a 3.0 port than a 2.0 port. 
Your computer should have a 2.0 port unless its really old. If your not sure just Google image search "USB 2.0 port" and see if you have something that looks like that on your computer.

Question 2

Is there any light flashing to indicate it's working? If it isn't what flash drive do your recommend that are good, but have a flashing light to show off when in use.

No LED. Sorry. I didn't even notice. I bought a bunch of these to give to clients when they need a temp storage.

I use Team 64GB USB3.0 flash drive daily at work (boot utility for Macs). It has a faint blue LED. Been reliable and speedy for my needs.

I've also been very happy with Corsair's survivor models (16 and 32GB) but they are priced more than other USB3.0.

Is this what I need to use to back up my failing Toshiba Satellite L505DE-LS5010 hard drive? If not can you please recommend what I do need?

You can back up anything with this. You want a flash drive that has enough capacity to hold all of the data on your hard drive, however.
