Yes it does have an optical out. Yes, you can upgrade the video card fairly easily. See my review though. I recommend getting a card with above average cooling. And I recommend finding a way to increase the speed of the case fans. This thing has horrible air flow design.

No it can't. It only as two memory slots and there is no such thing as a 6mb memory module. It can be upgraded to 16mb with two 8mb memory modules.

is this a quiet PC? can't have fan noise in studio

You will hear the fans when the graphics card is being pushed. Also when it wakes from a sleep state it briefly cycles the fans.
