The Alphacool ES 40mm 400-15,000rpm Fan (40x40x28mm) - Two Ball Bearing - PWM is a 40 mm server fan that runs from 400 to 15,000rpm on a 4-pin PWM connector. It measures 40 x 40 x 28 mm and has no 2 or 3-pin DC power connection, so it needs a 4-pin PWM header.

Where it goes

The ES fans were specially developed by Alphacool for use in servers and workstations. It says they offer an extremely high air flow and a very high static pressure, and are therefore ideal for use on radiators or as particularly powerful case fans.

PWM control

Unlike usual server fans, the Enterprise fans do not offer the usual 2 cables or the 3-pin connection. Instead of using those, Alphacool now uses a modern 4-pin PWM connection, which is supported by more and more server motherboards. Via that connection the fan always receives full voltage, and its speed is controlled by pulse width modulation. This means that it can be controlled over a much larger speed range, and with 0% PWM control the fans can even be stopped completely. Alphacool adds that a considerable amount of energy can be saved by controlling the fans in server racks.

The fan also offers a gentle start, which increases its service life and reduces the risk of injury. That matters at speeds of several thousand revolutions per minute, but no body parts should get between the fan blades in any case.

Double ball bearing

Classic plain bearings are not used here: the ES fans have a double ball bearing for an increased service life under full load. Alphacool notes that double ball bearings are generally considered to be the highest quality bearings in terms of durability and quality. The bearing also ensures a high level of smoothness in terms of minimal vibrations.

Protection circuits

Like all Enterprise fans from Alphacool, this one has several protective circuits. If the fans are blocked, they will attempt to restart automatically, after a few seconds and at a reduced speed. Thanks to the gentle start-up, including the emergency start function, a fan can be blocked for up to 72 hours without being damaged. If the polarity is reversed when connecting, Alphacool says the electronics will not burn out for at least 5 seconds. So a fan that is connected incorrectly for a short time is not a problem.
