I am looking to extend my workstation to utilize 2 monitors vs 1.

Will this allow me to connect a 2nd monitor so I can have different applications displayed on either monitor or will it just mirror the image?

The images will be identical as they are coming from the same signal. I use it at our church so that I have a monitor close to me mirroring what is on the projector. To have two monitors displaying different applications, you need a video card that is capable of performing this function. Most new video cards other than the very basic card can do this. Check the specs on them.
