Decorative vs. Concealed Hinges
Look at your cabinets to determine your hinge type. When the cabinet door is closed, decorative hinges can be seen, whereas concealed hinges are hidden.
Before you start, please confirm your cabinet type:
· Decorative hinges are used only on face-frame cabinets.
· Concealed hinges can be used on both face-frame and frameless (also known as European) cabinets.

Steps to verify the hinge type: Face Frame Hinges.
1. Face frame decorative hinges are only for framed cabinets.
2. Looking at your cabinet door, if the back is flat, you need an overlay hinge. If the back is stepped, you need an inset hinge.
3. Determine if your face frame decorative hinge is self-closing by counting the segments on the barrel. Self-closing decorative hinges have 3 segments, whereas non self-closing (also known as free-swinging decorative) hinges have 5 segments. Note: The two types cannot be interchanged.

A quick look at face frame cabinet hinges.
Face frame decorative hinges mount onto the front of the cabinet’s face frame. When the cabinet door is closed, the barrel, decorative mounting plate, and mounting screws show.
Amerock offers face frame hinges in self-closing and non self-closing hinge types, both in a wide variety of finishes, and a few different styles of mounting plates.
- SELF-CLOSING - the spring action in the barrel makes the door snap shut and stay secure.
- NON SELF-CLOSING - there is no spring, allowing the cabinet door to swing freely. A magnetic catch is recommended to hold the door in a close position.
Amerock face frame cabinet hinges come in a variable overlay, 3/8" inset, or a reverse bevel.
A quick look at wrap hinges.
Wrap decorative hinges mount onto the edge of the cabinet’s face frame and the back of the door, so when the cabinet door is closed, only the barrel shows.
Amerock offers wrap hinges in self-closing and non self-closing hinge types, both in a wide variety of finishes.
- SELF-CLOSING - the spring action in the barrel makes the door snap shut and stay secure. Amerock's self-closing wrap hinges are available in 1/4" overlay, 1/2" overlay, or a 3/8" inset.
- NON SELF-CLOSING - there is no spring, allowing the cabinet door to swing freely. A magnetic catch is recommended to hold the door in a close position. Amerock's non self-closing wrap hinges re made for full inset door that are 3/4" in thickness.
When looking to replace a wrap hinge, it is very important to know your current overlay size. The overlay is the amount or distance that the cabinet door overlaps the cabinet opening on the hinge side of the door.
A quick look at demountable hinges.
Demountable decorative hinges feature built-in mounting hardware that slides into specially slotted cabinets. When the cabinet door is closed, only the barrel shows. These hinges allow you to remove the door if you want to do so for cleaning or for other reasons.
Amerock offers single demountable and double demountable hinges in a variety of finishes, and come in 1/4" overlay,1/2" overlay, or 3/8" inset. All of our demountable hinges are self-closing.
- Single demountable - the hinge will slide into a T slot found on the edge of the door, and secures to the cabinet frame with 2 screws.
- Double demountable - there will be a T slot on both the edge of the cabinet door as well as the cabinet frame for which the hinge to slide in to. All necessary mounting hardware is built in.
Please measure your overlay carefully when ordering replacement hinges.
A quick look at H-type hinges.
H-type decorative hinges, sometimes called butterfly hinges, mount to the front of the cabinet’s face frame and door. Thus, when the cabinet door is closed, the entire hinge shows. This makes H-type hinges perfect for adding a decorative touch to furniture.
Also known as a surface mount hinge, Amerock offers H-type hinges in a variety of finishes with a unique hammered appearance, and are suitable on a "flush", or flat surface, as well on a cabinet door that is slightly raised. This image shows a 3/8" offset H-type hinge.
Amerock's H-type hinges are non self-closing, allowing the door to swing freely. A magnetic catch is recommended to hold the door tightly shut.
