Does it have to be plugged into an Ethernet interface to work?

No it doesn't .. it will repeat whatever wifi network you choose.. it can scan all wifi signals in range and it works pretty well.. have the router and repeater setup in a golf course with several hundred feet between two buildings.. been stable since installed last fall.

Does this unit work with Windows 10?.... or is a newer system available that is Win10 compatible?

It really only interacts with your router so It only needs a compatible web browser to set up. I was using windows XP, 7, 8 and Android. However this unit never really worked for me. Set up is iffy and the unit would sometimes hang on setup. After a week or two, it would drop the signal and would need to be setup again. Tech support is great, I called them so many times I knew most of their names. They RMA'd my unit about 4 times. Each replaced unit did exactly the same as the unit before. After months of frustration, I finally bought from another brand. It was a great decision, my new unit has worked flawlessly ever since. My SR10000 is just sitting here collecting dust.

Can I plug this in directly to my DSL modem?  I do not have an existing wireless network.

Don't believe you can.  Need to have an existing wireless network set up.  This products extends the range of your wireless signal and works great.

does this product work with iMac macBook etc.?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if the iMac / macbook is using a 2.4 GHz wireless connection to access the wifi network. You cannot use this device to extend the range of an Apple Airport Express unless the wireless connection between the Airport Express and the iMac is using a 2.4 GHz wifi connection. The SR10000 does not support 802.11a or 802.11n networks that use only 5 GHz.

Can I hook these up in series?  In other words, I want to extend the extender.  Say I wanted to extend my wireless signal to the very back of my property, will a second one pick up and extend the signal from the first?

I have never tried to do this but it seems like you could as during the setup of the repeater function it will search for your active wireless connection and then ask if that is the one you want to connect to and extend.  If you live on a large piece of property like a farm you may want to go with a product designed for that.  I would suggest ayrstone and looking into this product.  I install for an art museum that needed to connect two houses in a park setting and it is working great.

I use this in my house as a range extender accessing my main router and it works really well.  It's about 2k sq feet from original router and I have all my media room streaming boxes accessing with virtually no buffering on 1080p so is really good as an extender without needing a hard wire.

How it works? Does it really boost existing routers? An existing signal is enhanced? A signal is either bad or good. Is it repeating a signal or making the signal better

I am not certain I have the expertise to use this device to its capability or answer your question satisfactorily.  Wireless networking stretches my abilities.  I think the word boost is a misnomer for this device.  It is a range extender, true, but it does not increase signal strength over that available from the signal source.  In fact, it may decrease that signal strength from the source router, access point, etc.  It really needs to be sufficiently close to have a fairly strong signal to extend. They recommend minimum incoming signal strength of 70% prior to extend. I have tried it under various scenarios, i.e. trying to boost RV park weak signals to creating my own wireless internal network in my RV, to increasing signal range in a church auditorium.  Eventually I settled on using it for a bridge or wireless adapter in my RV.  It is capable of receiving a stronger signal that a typical laptop wireless adapter.  Sorry, not much help.
