Just bought an AOC monitor and there is a white ended cord that goes into the monitor and my computer.  The cord screws into the monitor, but doesn't fit into my Dell 8250 computer.  What is this cord for and how do I resolve this problem?

The white cord you described is a DVI cable, it carries the video signal from your computer to the monitor. However your computer might not be compatible with DVI cables but don't worry. In the box the monitor came in there should be another cable with blue ends that also screw into the monitor. This is a VGA cable, it does the same thing the DVI cable does but, it should be compatible with your dell computer. Use this cable instead. If you still experience issues, make sure the power cable is properly plugged into the monitor, or try turning the monitor on and off again by pressing the power button located underneath the bottom right corner of the monitor.

THis should connect to a standard laptop computer, right?

Well, as long as that laptop has a VGA / DVI output, yes. Most laptops have VGA outputs, but more recent models don't, since it's a fairly old standard. You should be able to figure this out by looking at the manufacturer's website and finding your model number there.

Some answered questions, as well as the reviews, here indicate that this doesn't come with a DVI cable, but others say that it does. Also, a YouTube unboxing of this exact model showed both cables as well as speakers, even though it shouldn't have either of these.

So, does it or does it not come with a DVI cable and/or built-in speakers? Was it changed in the past or something?

It is equipped with a DVI outlet and standard monitor outlet, but did not come with the DVI plug.  I had to buy it separately so I could have 2 monitors at the same time connected to the computer. Hope this helps.

What is the depth - thickness - of just the monitor, not including the stand ?

The display is about 3" thick. Its a bit hard to measure since there is a buldge in back where the electronics and plugs are housed. Overall, its pretty slim and I have it wall mounted and its hardly protruding at all IMHO.

Does this have built in speakers?

No, there are no built-in speakers. But Wal-Mart sells a set of speakers for about $20 that has worked for me for years with no issues at all.

Unfortunately no it does not but comes with a dvi to vga converter. i bought this monitor on sale for 90 dollars for a third screen so i was gonna use vga no matter what its a good screen though for the price i got it for

Yes, the monitor can be positioned vertically as well as being orientated in a portrait view by the Operating System.

I bought this a while ago and it broke because I am an idiot. When I got the old one, the max resolution was 1680×1050 (16x10) instead of the advertised 1920x1080 (16x9) I did not think much of this, but did anyone else have this problem? I am going to buy another one only because I didn't have a problem with the other one other than what I just stated, but I am just wondering if anyone else had a 16:10 ratio instead of the 16:9 ratio.

I looked up monitors AOC sells and this was the monitor I got before http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G1GC1443 I am just confirming that I was actually shipped the wrong monitor last time and that the one I have now is the right one.
