Yes, there is a stand in the package. At first I didn't think it would be very versatile, but after setting it up I found it does have the ability to tilt, which helped a lot, since it is so big. I have been 100% happy with it this far.

I purchased one of these monitors a few months ago, and it works very well (especially using the DVI cable). However, anytime I use an HDMI cable with this monitor, I get a black bar that surrounds the image. Does anyone see this behavior?

Based on what you're describing, that is correctable using your video card's software (either AMD's Catalyst Control Center or Nvidia's Control Panel). What you are looking for is an option that allows you to "overscan" the image, adjust the image, or it might be referred to as "scaling" the image. Both AMD catalyst and Nvidia Control Panel have this capability.

I'm wondering if the actual display is glossy or matte? The product says gloss but I'm not sure if that's the cabinet or the screen.

The bezel is glossy black but the screen is a matte.

What other cables do I need?

If your PC has an HDMI port on the video card you should pick up an HDMI cable for best picture quality. If you only have DVI you can also pick up an HDMI to DVI cable or adapter.

Is the CD just a user manual or is it something else that needs to be installed?

There is some install information on the disk if you are using windows, with a Mac you can plug and play or download the driver from the internet.

Does this monitor come with built-in speakers and if so, what is the quality of the speakers?  How does this compare to the ASUS VE278H monitor?

While this monitor does not have built in speakers, it does have an audio pass-thru cable so that you can output audio from the HDMI (I assume) back out to headphones or an external speaker system.

I just purchased one of these monitors but I use a VGA to DVI cable to connect to my Radeon card. Picture and response time is phenomenal
