How does it connect to the computer?

It connects with a supplied USB Male-to-Male cable. It's not very long (3 feet maybe) but you can get a longer one for less than $10. It's just the male connector on both ends, and needs to be USB3 (blue port)

Does this need any software or OS to run?

For Windows, you'll need a program called DisplayLink. Can't speak to macOS or Linux.

Can this work as a Primary monitor in Windows 10 on a desktop PC or does it only work as a secondary monitor for laptops?

Can work as both.  You can change the settings on windows 10 > desktop > personalize
